Inleiding.
Aan een inham in de Citadellaan gelegen BENZINESTATION uit 1929 van architect H. Danser in de stijl van het Nieuwe Bouwen. Enkele openingen in de achtergevel zijn in later tijd (gedeeltelijk) dichtgezet. In de linker gevel is in de jaren negentig van de 20ste eeuw een airconditioning geplaatst. De benzinepompen zijn van later datum. Het belendende voormalige kantoorgebouw, via een smeedijzeren hek met het benzinestation verbonden, valt buiten de bescherming.
Omschrijving.
Het vrijgelegen, voornamelijk uit gepleisterde baksteen, glas en beton opgetrokken benzinestation beslaat een rechthoekige plattegrond met afgeronde hoeken aan de straatzijde en telt een bouwlaag onder een plat dak. Op circa een meter onder de dakrand een omlopende betonnen luifel, eveneens met afgeronde hoeken aan de straatzijde. De achtergevel en gedeelte van de linker en rechter gevel bestaan uit een dragende, gecementeerde en beschilderde bakstenen wand. De symmetrische voorgevel en de aan de straat gelegen delen van de linker en rechter gevel bestaan uit een doorlopende glazen pui. In de glaspui bevindt zich een twaalfdelig stalen venster op een gemetselde, gecementeerde en beschilderde afzaat met plint. Aan de uiteinden een beglaasde stalen deur met valraam in het bovenlicht. In het muurdeel van de rechter gevel (noordwestelijke hoek van het pand) een houten deur op een dorpel van marmercement die toegang geeft tot een versoberd toilet annex keukentje, nu in gebruik als magazijn. In het interieur zijn de ijzeren profielbalken van de zoldering door een verlaagd plafond aan het zicht onttrokken. Van het interieur zijn vermeldenswaard: vensterbank met witte keramische tegels, plint onder de glaspui en lambrisering (deels) met gevoegde wandtegels, toilet/keukengroep (deels) met zwart-gele vloertegels en crèmekleurige wandtegels.
Waardering.
Het benzinestation is van algemeen belang. Het object bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als herinnering aan de forse groei van de automobiel-industrie tijdens het Interbellum, vanwege het belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van benzinestations en vanwege de innovatieve waarde van de uiterlijke verschijningsvorm, die gepast werd gevonden voor het uitdragen van de functie. Het object bezit als vroege exponent van het Nieuwe Bouwen architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege het belang van de stijl en de toegepaste bouwtechniek voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur. Het object bezit ensemblewaarden wegens de situering, verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de belendende wijk De Muntel in de jaren twintig en gelegen aan een van de oude uitvalswegen van Den Bosch naar het noorden. Daarnaast als markant voorbeeld van de historische bebouwing aan de Citadellaan. A PETROL STATION from 1929 by architect H. Danser in the style of the New Building Movement, located at an indentation in the Citadellaan. Several openings in the rear facade were (partially) closed at a later date. In the left facade, air conditioning was installed in the 1990s. The petrol pumps are of a later date. The adjoining former office building, connected to the petrol station via a wrought-iron gate, falls outside the protection.
Description.
The detached petrol station, constructed mainly of rendered brickwork, glass and concrete, has a rectangular footplan with rounded corners facing the street and comprises one storey under a flat roof. Approximately one metre below the roof edge, a continuous concrete canopy, also with rounded corners facing the street. The rear facade and portions of the left and right facades consist of a load-bearing wall of cemented and painted brick. The symmetrical front facade and the street-facing parts of the left and right facades consist of continuous glazing. In the glazed frontage is a twelve-part steel window on a mortared, cemented and painted brick base with plinth. At the ends a glazed steel door with sash light in the fanlight. In the wall section of the right facade (northwestern corner of the building) a wooden door on a threshold of marble cement providing access to a simplified toilet combined with kitchenette, now used as a storage room. In the interior, the iron profile beams of the ceiling were concealed by a suspended ceiling. Notable interior features include: window sill with white ceramic tiles, plinth beneath the glazing and panelling (partially) with jointed wall tiles, toilet/kitchen unit (partially) with black and yellow floor tiles and cream-coloured wall tiles.
Valuation.
The petrol station is of general importance. The object possesses cultural-historical values as a reminder of the substantial growth of the automobile industry during the Interbellum period, because of its importance for the typological development of petrol stations, and because of the innovative value of its external appearance, which was considered suitable to express its function. The object possesses architectural-historical value as an early exponent of the New Building Movement because of the importance of the style and the building technique applied for the history of architecture. The object possesses ensemble values because of its location, connected with the development of the adjoining district De Muntel in the 1920s and situated on one of the old exit roads from Den Bosch to the north. Furthermore, as a striking example of the historical buildings on the Citadellaan. The object is of importance because of the integrity of the main form in relation to the visual and structural integrity of the district De Muntel.
