Inleiding.

Introduction.

The SACRISTAN'S HOUSE of the Sint Janskathedraal is situated on the southern side of the Choorstraat and adjoins the rectory of the Sint Jan at the corner of Choorstraat - Parade (national monument, mon. no. 21592). On the eastern side the sacristan's house borders the convent of the Sisters of the Choorstraat. The sacristan's house dates from the same building period as the rectory, circa 1855. The building was constructed in a sober Eclectic stylistic language, designed by architect J.H.H. Bolsius, who also designed the rectory. The sacristan's house is accessible from the rectory via a number of connecting doors. In the post-war period the building underwent some alterations, including a single-storey extension to the rear and the placement of some new partition walls on the first floor and attic floor.

Description.

The partially cellared building has a roughly rectangular floor plan. The building has two storeys, on the front elevation under a hipped roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. Rear section under flat roof. Within this a small open courtyard. Façades constructed of handmade brick, with ashlar plinth, sills and steps. Gutter. The front façade is terminated by a cornice. At the far left the entrance section of the sacristan's house, formed by a wooden panelled door with two-pane fanlight and steps. At the far right the entrance to a former carriage house, with double panelled door. Fanlight with a geometric glazing pattern featuring honeycomb forms. The rooms are furnished with six-pane casement windows.

The soberly executed rear façade has, on the rear side, to the right a single-storey extension under flat roof of later construction date. To the left of this a rear entrance with fanlight. Ashlar steps. The rear façade is furnished with close-fitted windows with stone frames, containing T-windows. In the interior the original layout of the sacristan's house has been preserved in its main lines. On the ground floor at the far left a narrow corridor, which provides access to a front and rear room. Between these the stairwell and an intermediate space: this was later opened up on the side of the front room. To the south of the rear room an open area, directly against the rear façade the kitchen. This layout is repeated on the upper floor. To the right in the sacristan's house on the ground floor a carriage house with at the rear a large space, which originally served as a wash room (now kitchen). On the storey above were originally at the front a strong room, at the rear a guest room. Later used as an upper dwelling. On the attic floor in the post-war period some partition walls were placed for bedrooms. From the original interior a small number of elements remain. Among these are of particular importance: in several rooms still the original panelled doors and door frames, simple stucco-work ceilings with mouldings in the front and rear rooms on the ground floor and first floor. Cellar with barrel vault and wine recesses.
