Omschrijving
Kathedrale BASILIEK van St. Jan Evangelist. Grote vijfbeukige Brabants gotische kruisbasiliek met kooromgang en straalkapellen, middentoren en westtoren, sacristieen, kapittelhuis, stadskomme, devotiekapellen en doopkapel.
Westtoren (eigen monumentnummer 21880) uit plm. 1280, door Willem van Kessel begonnen, voortgezet door Alard du Hamel en Jan Heyns, vervolgens Jan I en II Darkennes. plm. 1550 bouw gestaakt. Restauratie van 1860 tot 1939 en 1949 tot heden.
De rijke inventaris (barokke preekstoel en orgelkas, gotische koperen doopvont, Antwerps altaarretabel uit plm.1500, gotisch gesneden koorbanden, tochtportalen uit XVII, XVIIe eeuwse schilderijen, laatgotische en XVIIe eeuwse kroonluchters enz.) in de laatste jaren nog met opmerkelijke stukken uitgebreid (laatbarokke biechtstoelen, XVIe en XVIIe eeuwse beelden en schilderijen).
Voorts vele grafzerken, een epitaaf en het grafmonument van bisschop Masius en enkele muurschilderingen. In de orgelkas uit 1620 een orgel met Hoofdwerk, Bovenwerk, Rugpositief en vrij Pedaal, in 1787 gemaakt door A.F.G. Heyneman. Heyneman gebruikte pijpwerk van voorgaande orgelmakers: F. Hocque uit 1622, Galtus en Germer van Hagerbeer uit 1634. Het Heyneman-orgel werd in 1902 en 1953 totaal omgebouwd. In 1980 volgde reconstructie van het Heyneman-orgel, waarbij blaasbalgen, windladen en tractuur werden vernieuwd.

West tower (separate monument number 21880) from c. 1280, begun by Willem van Kessel, continued by Alard du Hamel and Jan Heyns, subsequently Jan I and II Darkennes. c. 1550 construction halted. Restoration from 1860 to 1939 and 1949 to present.
The rich inventory (Baroque pulpit and organ case, Gothic copper baptismal font, Antwerp altarpiece from c.1500, Gothic carved choir stalls, passage portals from 17th century, 17th-century paintings, late Gothic and 17th-century chandeliers etc.) in recent years further enriched with remarkable items (late Baroque confessionals, 16th and 17th-century sculptures and paintings).
Furthermore many tombstones, an epitaph and the funerary monument of bishop Masius and some wall paintings.
