Inleiding.

Bovenlichten in glas-in-lood.

Introduction.

The former OFFICE BUILDING of the Fire Insurance Company for the Kingdom of the Netherlands is located on the northern side of the Choorstraat, in the centre of 's-Hertogenbosch. Above the office was an UPPER DWELLING for the attorney-in-fact of the insurance company, Mr. Lievegoed. On the rear side of the office building, at the Sint Janskerkhof, a CARETAKER'S DWELLING. The office building, constructed in Neo-Renaissance style, dates from 1903 and was designed by A.J. van Kempen and J.G.Th. Aerden. Around 1940 the office building was converted to use as a library, whereby part of the corridor, together with the former archive, were converted into a library room. A partition wall was also removed. The building functions as a museum.

Description.

The office building with a basement has a roughly rectangular floor plan. The building is composed of three sections: at the front a two-storey building component, containing the upper dwelling, under a flat roof with hips, covered with curved tiles. Behind this a narrower single-storey building component under a flat roof for staff and archive rooms. A skylight was later added to this. On the rear side of the building - on the northwestern corner - a narrow, L-shaped, two-storey building component under a hipped roof, in which the caretaker's dwelling was housed. Profiled gutter on consoles. The facades are constructed in red facing brick with decorative brick coursing, with stone plinth and stone bands. The front facade has a three-part composition. On the right a facade section of two bays, to the left of this a risalit comprising two bays with a stepped gable. Far left a narrower facade section with double entrance. This entrance section has two separate panelled doors with wrought-iron grillwork. Fanlights in stained glass. Above the double entrance a tile panel with the text "Fire Insurance Company for the Kingdom of the Netherlands - Anno 1838" and a Royal Coat of Arms between olive leaf decoration. The front facade has T-windows with stone fronton. In the projecting section basement windows with anti-theft bars and at the height of the first floor a wooden three-sided bay window on a stone corbel. Stained glass in the fanlights of the bay window. In the stepped gable a corner window and two stone facade stones with the dates 1838 and 1903. The stepped gable is decorated with two corner pilasters and a centrally placed pilaster set diagonally, crowned with stone obelisks. The northern facade of the front, two-storey building component overlooks a narrow courtyard. In this on the right a rear entrance with fanlight. To the left of this a two-pane toilet window, with a smaller single-pane window slanted above it. On the upper floor a window with T-window. To the right of this a small single-pane window. The rear facade of the upper dwelling overlooks a roof terrace. In the middle of this a double opening glazed door with fanlight to the kitchen. To the left of this a T-sash window. Far right in the rear facade a small extension under a flat roof. To the left of this a rear entrance with fanlight and a narrow two-pane window with tilting sash. The staircase is built higher and has an arched window with glazing bars arranged in an arch form. The rear facade of the caretaker's dwelling at the Sint Janskerkhof has two entrances (panelled door with fanlight under a relieving arch), of which the rightmost is for the dwelling, the left for a storeroom. The caretaker's dwelling is provided with sash windows. The western side facade of the caretaker's dwelling has on the ground floor a six-pane sash window. To the right of this a smaller three-pane window. In the eastern side facade, in the location of the former staff office room, sliding windows.

The interior still partially shows the original disposition. The rightmost entrance provides access to a central corridor. To the right of this at the front two directors' offices, separated by a sliding door. Behind these rooms an office for the manager, behind this the staff office. To the right of the corridor, which originally extended to the rear of the building, the archive and the safe. The rear part of the corridor was later added to the former archive room. On the rear side of the building the storeroom and kitchen of the caretaker's dwelling. The leftmost entrance provides access to the vestibule and staircase of the upper dwelling. This has a central corridor. Two living rooms and a bedroom at the front, kitchen, toilet and bathroom at the rear. In the interior a number of original elements have been retained. Of these the following are noteworthy: in various rooms profiled window and door frames, floors in oak parquet. In the directors' offices wooden interior shutters, panelled wainscoting, sliding door with panels, stone chimney pieces, simple stucco ceilings; in the corridor a decorative tile floor, in the toilet spaces on the ground floor Art Nouveau tilework; in the living rooms in the upper dwelling rich stucco ceilings and stone chimney pieces, in the archive room a large safe with a barrel vault. The building still has the authentic boarded pine roof truss structure with improved Dutch roof trusses.
