Inleiding.
GEVANGENISCOMPLEX, in 1912 ontworpen door W.C. Metzelaar in Ambachtelijk-traditionele vormen. De te beschermen cellenvleugel A bevindt zich centraal op het binnenterrein van het Paleis van Justitie en het Huis van Bewaring.
Omschrijving.
Langgerekte drielaags bouwmassa op rechthoekige grondslag met gevels van in kruisverband gemetselde machinale baksteen. In de lengte telt de vleugel achttien traveeën; in de breedte drie. De cellenvleugel heeft een plat dak. De recht gesloten vensters zijn getralied en hebben in de gietijzeren onderdorpels verwerkte ventilatieopeningen. Inwendig wordt het gebouw in de lengte doorsneden door een brede centrale gang. De cellen bevinden zich aan weerszijden hiervan. Centraal in de gang is in de jaren tachtig een over de hoogte van alle bouwlagen doorlopende, rechthoekige bewakingstoren opgesteld. De verdiepingen zijn bereikbaar door een stelsel van twee gietijzeren trappen waarvan de leuningen overgaan in de ijzeren balustrades met ijzeren roostervloeren op de verdiepingen. De celindeling is nog de oorspronkelijke evenals de detaillering van de ramen en deuren.
Waardering.
De cellenvleugel A van het Huis van Bewaring te 's-Hertogenbosch is van algemeen belang. Hij heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de justitiële geschiedenis en de daarmee verbonden typologische ontwikkeling der gebouwen. Door de functionele samenhang van de verschillende gebouwen en de enigszins geïsoleerde ligging van het complex heeft het geheel ensemblewaarden. De cellenvleugel is in detaillering een van de gaafst bewaarde gevangenisgebouwen van de hand van W.C. Metzelaar. Het geheel aan gebouwen is van belang vanwege de functionele en typologische zeldzaamheid.

Elongated three-storey building mass on rectangular ground plan with facades of machine-made brick laid in stretcher bond. In length the wing comprises eighteen bays; in width three. The cell wing has a flat roof. The straight closed windows are barred and have ventilation openings incorporated in the cast-iron sills. Internally the building is divided lengthwise by a broad central corridor. The cells are situated on either side of this. Centrally in the corridor, a rectangular supervision tower extending over the height of all storeys has been installed in the 1980s. The storeys are accessible by a system of two cast-iron staircases whose railings extend into iron balustrades with iron grille floors on the storeys. The cell layout is still the original, as is the detailing of the windows and doors.

Cell wing A of the Huis van Bewaring at 's-Hertogenbosch is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as a particular expression of judicial history and the associated typological development of buildings. Through the functional coherence of the various buildings and the somewhat isolated location of the complex, the whole has ensemble values.
