Inleiding.

Waardering.

Introduction.

The RESIDENTIAL HOUSE forms the southern terminus of a continuous block of residential houses at the corner of Van der Does de Willeboissingel-Luybenstraat. The residential house was built some years earlier than the other residential houses in this block, presumably shortly after the raising of 't Zand in 1890. The design was provided by architect P. Th. Stornebrink. The house displays an Eclectic formal language, with elements of Neo-Renaissance and is somewhat more richly detailed than the other buildings in the block. In 1935 an extension of the Capuchin Monastery was built onto the southern side of the residential house.

Description.

The cellar-level residential house has a rectangular floor plan and comprises partly two, partly three storeys beneath a flat roof with pitched section, covered with Tuiles du Nord tiles and slates. Moulded gutter on brackets along the pitched section. Roof dormer above the front facade. Facades constructed in brick with stone bands, ashlar plinth and drip mouldings, natural stone decorations in the gable. Friezes with polychrome decorative brickwork in the parapets and beneath the drip moulding. The front facade of the residential house has an asymmetrical composition, with on the right a narrow bay containing the entrance section. To the left of this a broad, projecting gable section, terminated by a gable with natural stone volute-shaped corbels. Entrance section with broad wooden panelled door with wrought-iron decorative grille and fanlight. This entrance lies in a porch with wooden canopy, above which four light openings. High ashlar stoop. Above the entrance section a window with T-frame. In the projection on the ground floor and first storey a broad three-light window with fanlights, above which on the ground floor a shutter cupboard. In the gable a window with six-pane hopper window. Two cellar windows with grilles at basement level. The simply executed rear facade is concealed on the ground floor by two extensions: on the left a narrow brick extension beneath a flat roof, on the right a wooden extension for a conservatory at the level of the raised ground floor. In the conservatory a glazed double door with side and fanlights. Glass-in-lead in the fanlights. In the narrow extension on the left side of the rear facade a rear entrance, consisting of a hinged door with fanlight. At basement level hopper windows. Internally the original layout has been largely retained. On the ground floor a vestibule with draught-lobby doors and a slightly elevated corridor with a flight of stairs. To the left of this at the front the drawing room, at the rear a living room with conservatory. On the upper storey two large bedrooms to the left of the corridor and two smaller rooms at the ends thereof. Kitchen at the front of the basement, coal store to the left of this. Cellar at the rear. Also retained in the interior are a large number of original elements. Of importance are among others: Staircase with richly executed newel post and stringers, in the corridor a tile floor with polychrome ornamental tiles, corridor in basement with simpler tile floor. In the drawing room and living room stucco ceilings, black marble fireplaces and a panelled sliding door with richly executed wooden frame (pilasters and cornice). In various rooms panelled doors with moulded door frames. Glass-in-lead windows in the conservatory.
