Inleiding
De bij het voormalige klooster van de "Zusters van de Choorstraat" behorende KAPEL is gesitueerd op het binnenhof van het voormalige klooster. De georiënteerde kapel is via een dwars op de hoofdvleugel gesitueerd bouwdeel verbonden met het voormalige klooster. De kapel werd gebouwd in 1910-1911, naar ontwerp van architect W. Th. van Aalst en vertoont de vormentaal van de Neo-Gotiek. In 1962 werden de beschildering en de glas-in-loodramen van de kapel gewijzigd.
Omschrijving
De kapel is opgezet als een driebeukige, vier traveeën tellende kruisbasiliek met galerijen en een vijf achtste koorsluiting. Tegen de oostelijke zijde van de transeptarmen twee traptorentjes onder kegeldak. Aan weerszijden van het koor een tweelaags aanbouw voor de sakristie en bergruimte onder schilddak. De kapel heeft een samengesteld zadeldak, gedekt met leien. Octogonale dakruiter. Dakkapellen boven de zijgevels. De zijbeuken hebben een plat dak, afgezet door een bakstenen balustrade. De gevels van de kapel zijn opgetrokken in baksteen. De westelijke gevel wordt afgesloten door een topgevel met op de noordelijke hoek een octogonaal torentje onder spits, gedekt met leien. De westgevel gaat grotendeels schuil achter een in 1911 gebouwde en later verhoogde achtervleugel van het klooster. De topgevel heeft een geleding in de vorm van klimmende boognissen en is voorzien van een groot spitsboogvenster, waarin lancetten met driepastracering, waarboven twee driepassen en een vijflobbige oculus. De transeptarmen worden eveneens afgesloten door topgevels, waarin een identieke geleding en vensterindeling. In de transeptgevels uitgebouwde biechtstoelen. Tegen de zijgevels van de kapel steunberen, afgedekt door ezelsruggen. Het schip is in de zijgevels voorzien van spitsboogvensters, ingevuld met maaswerk in natuursteen. Op de begane grond in de zijbeuken brede vensters, ter hoogte van de galerijen per twee gekoppelde, smallere spitsboogvensters. In de lichtbeuk en in de transeptarmen raamtripletten. Inwendig heeft de kapel zesdelige kruisribgewelven, in de viering en het koor stergewelven. Zijbeuken met galerijen. Marmeren zuilen met koolbladkapitelen. In de orgeltribune een Neo-Barok orgelfront van beeldhouwer P.J. van der Mark. In het zuidelijke transeptvenster een glas-in-loodraam van Marius Leeuw.
Waardering
De kapel, behorend bij het voormalige klooster van het Liefdesgesticht "In Omnibus Charitas" is van algemeen belang. De kapel bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de geschiedenis van de katholieke congregaties in 's-Hertogenbosch. Het grootschalige gebouw, behorend bij het voormalige klooster aan de Choorstraat, is voorts van belang als illustratie van de typologische ontwikkeling van de kloosterkapel. De kapel heeft architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van de neo-gotische stijl, karakteristiek voor de gebouwen van katholieke kloosters, scholen en instituten rondom de eeuwwisseling van de negentiende naar de twintigsteeeuw. Voorts heeft de kloosterkapel architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de plaats die het inneemt binnen het oeuvre van de architect W. Th. van Aalst. The CHAPEL belonging to the former convent of the "Sisters of the Choorstraat" is situated in the inner courtyard of the former convent. The oriented chapel is connected via a structural element positioned transversely to the main wing with the former convent. The chapel was built in 1910-1911, designed by architect W. Th. van Aalst and displays the vocabulary of Neo-Gothic style. In 1962 the paintwork and stained glass windows of the chapel were altered.
Description
The chapel is laid out as a three-aisled, four-bay cruciform basilica with galleries and a five-eighths choir closure. On the eastern side of the transept arms two small staircase towers under conical roof. On either side of the choir a two-storey annexe for the sacristy and storage space under hipped roof. The chapel has a composite gabled roof, covered with slates. Octagonal roof lantern. Roof dormers above the side gables. The side aisles have a flat roof, edged by a brick balustrade. The facades of the chapel are constructed in brick. The western facade is terminated by a stepped gable with on the northern corner an octagonal tower with a spire, covered with slates. The west facade is largely concealed behind a rear wing of the convent built in 1911 and later heightened. The stepped gable has articulation in the form of climbing arches and is provided with a large pointed arch window, in which lancets with three-lobed tracery, above which two three-lobes and a five-lobed oculus. The transept arms are likewise terminated by stepped gables, with an identical articulation and window arrangement. Confessionals built out in the transept facades. Against the side facades of the chapel buttresses, topped by saddle-backs. The nave is provided in the side facades with pointed arch windows, filled with tracery in ashlar. On the ground floor in the side aisles broad windows, at the level of the galleries per two coupled, narrower pointed arch windows. In the clerestory and in the transept arms window triplets. Internally the chapel has six-part cross-ribbed vaults, in the crossing and choir stellar vaults. Side aisles with galleries. Marble columns with leaf capitals. In the organ gallery a Neo-Baroque organ front by sculptor P.J. van der Mark. In the southern transept window a stained glass window by Marius Leeuw.
