Inleiding
SCHUTSLUIS ("Helsluis"), gebouwd in 1864 en hoofdonderdeel van het sluiscomplex Hel- en Zuilespolder. De sluis bevindt zich tussen de toenmalige Helpolder (nu een deel van de Zuilespolder) en de Polder Stededijk. De Helsluis ligt daar in de Helsloot, die een verbinding vormt tussen de Nieuwe Merwede en de Beneden Merwede. Over de noordelijke deuren van de sluis ligt een bijbehorende, ijzeren rolbrug.
Zowel de schuiven van de sluis als de rolbrug worden nog met de hand bediend. De sluis wordt gecompleteerd door remmingswerken aan weerszijden van de sluishoofden.
Omschrijving
De Helsluis is een zogenaamde groene schutsluis. De sluis heeft in 1982 vernieuwde, gemetselde sluishoofden met hardstenen hoekstenen en haalkommen. De lensvormige sluiskolk heeft schuin aflopende kadewanden, die aan de onderkant met basaltblokken zijn bekleed. In en voor de sluiskolk staan houten constructies met dukdalven die als remmingswerken fungeren. Tussen de sluishoofden staan houten puntdeuren, die in 1982 zijn vernieuwd. De sluisdeuren met overloop en vergrendelstangen zijn door middel van rechte heugels verbonden met de in stalen kasten opgeborgen elektrische bedieningsmechanismen op de sluishoofden. De sluiskleppen worden door middel van slingers met de hand bediend. De ijzeren rolbrug ligt op de westelijke oever van het noordelijke sluishoofd. De brug beweegt met twee stel stalen wielen over op bielzen liggende rails. De brug is samengesteld uit balustrades van geklonken vakwerkdelen en een op ijzeren liggers bevestigd houten brugdek met eveneens van hout vervaardigde aanbruggen. De aanbrug aan de rolbrug is hiermee met kettingen bevestigd. Aan de westzijde van het zuidelijke sluishoofd staat een open schotbalkenloods, waarbij een inmiddels verdwenen ijzeren kraan stond. Een ijzeren kaapstander is eveneens verdwenen. Nog wel aanwezig is een dubbele peilschaal, waarop ook de waterstand van de watersnoodramp van 1-2-1953 staat aangegeven.
Waardering
De schutsluis ("Helsluis"), hoofdonderdeel van het sluiscomplex Hel- en Zuilespolder, is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde en vanwege de ensemblewaarde.

SHIP LOCK ("Helsluis"), built in 1864 and principal component of the Hel- and Zuilespolder sluice complex. The bridge is composed of balustrades of riveted lattice sections and a wooden bridge deck fastened to iron beams, with approaches also made of wood. The approach to the rolling bridge is fastened to this by chains. On the west side of the southern sluice head stands an open timber-framed shed, where an iron crane once stood but is no longer present. An iron bollard has also disappeared. Still present is a double gauge, which also shows the water level of the flood disaster of 1-2-1953.
