Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2: HISTORISCHE PARK- EN TUINAANLEG.
Waardering
De HISTORISCHE PARK- EN TUINAANLEG is van algemeen belang:
- vanwege de herkenbaarheid van de historisch gegroeide situatie, die representatief kan heten voor de geschiedenis van veel buitenplaatsen in 's-Graveland. Hierbinnen zijn restanten van een 18de eeuwse aanleg opgenomen in de verlandschappelijkte delen;
- vanwege de fraaie landschappelijke aanleg voor het huis;

Description
Description component 2: HISTORICAL PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT.
As a result of the ownership history of Spanderswoud, the subdivision of the country estate, its later reunification and subsequent expansion with adjacent country estates, no grand coherent park design was ever realized here. This is why a number of scattered elements from different periods are found. The unifying factor in this is the strong straight line, formed by the land reclamation structure, and visible in the large open space on the north side and the long Spanderslaan planted with large beeches. Furthermore, there are two core areas, around the house and the layout on the former Wolfsbergen. The layout in the immediate surroundings of the house. This rectangular area is surrounded from time immemorial by a system of wide ditches. The eastern ditch has a semi-circular protrusion. It is unclear whether this is an 18th-century form, or a later attempt at landscaping the watercourse. As a result of this watercourse, the characteristic location of the service buildings also arose. Besides the bridge with the lanterns, there was a second 19th-century bridge on the south-east side. However, this has disappeared. On this land, the vegetable garden and orchard were located on the north-east side. This is still clearly recognizable from the garden walls and the small gate building. This part is now being replanted with fruit trees and espalier fruit. There probably was also a modest formal layout in front of the house and to its south. The originally rectangular pond and the avenue with the large beeches to the south of the house point to this. Subsequently, during the first half of the 19th century, the garden underwent landscaping. The rectangular pond became round with an island in the middle. In front of the house came a large park meadow, surrounded by trees and shrubs. In this wood a circular walk was incorporated. From the house there is a fine view line to the Noordereinde, where some trees in the avenue planting were omitted in order to preserve this view. On the north edge of the walk stands a large sweet chestnut tree estimated to be nearly 400 years old. Around 1900 a new formal garden in the fashion of those days was laid out adjoining the south facade of the house. Old images also show flower borders and a rosarium. However, this has disappeared again, but the location of the garden, with a layout following main lines, is still recognizable. In this garden, on the south side, a bust is displayed on a high 18th-century plinth. This plinth was recovered during dredging works in one of the 18th-century ponds and presumably originates from Wolfsbergen. The bust is of unknown origin. The second important core area is formed by the landscaped layout on the eastern part of the land that originally belonged to Wolfsbergen. Here there was initially a modest 18th-century formal layout approximately in the middle of the plot. The canal with the two ponds still recalls this period. Subsequently, around 1800, the rear part of the plots began to be wooded, during which the large meandering pond was also laid out. Following the purchase of this part at Spanderswoud in 1843, a connection was made by extending the Spanderslaan in forked form and leading it in a meandering course to the south. In doing so, a viewpoint was created in the north-eastern tip of the wood. The two branches of the new avenue were connected to a presumably older avenue that once lay on the boundary between the two plots. The wood provides access to a number of open meadows. On the edge of one of these meadows, two service cottages were built.
Valuation
The HISTORICAL PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT is of general importance:
- because of the recognizability of the historically developed situation, which can be considered representative of the history of many country estates in 's-Graveland. Within this are remnants of an 18th-century layout incorporated in the landscaped parts;
- because of the fine landscaped layout in front of the house;
- because of the unique open character of the northern part.
