Inleiding

Description
Introduction
'Customs information bureau of the ANWB', KIOSK built in 1938 by order of the ANWB to the design of architect BERT SCHULTHEISS from Haarlem, in the style of NIEUWE BOUWEN. The small building is located at Plein Mooi Nederland, near the former border with Germany which was relocated in 1949, and functioned here as a tourist information office. The development of tourism in the municipality of Ubbergen began around the turn of the century and is closely linked to the attractive landscape in this area. At the level of the square the Van Randwijckweg bends off from the through road Rijksstraatweg and runs upward over the ridge. Here a mountain railway to Berg en Dal existed for some decades, while a steam tram to Germany ran over the Rijksstraatweg. The small building is situated between these two streets, at the end of an already existing retaining wall that accommodates the height difference between both streets. This height difference creates a special roof shape with unequal and offset roofs and facade surfaces. The small building is moreover oriented in two directions by ticket windows on both streets, and thus does not have a true front facade.
Description
KIOSK built against an embankment with asymmetrically arranged facades and, as a result of the height difference, offset side facades. The small building is constructed of reinforced concrete on a rectangular ground plan and has whitewashed (terra nova) walls combined with a high plinth of hand-formed red brickwork laid in Norwegian bond. On each main facade the small building has one storey and is finished with a gabled roof overhanging on all sides with the ridge parallel to the street. The overhang of the roof panels has a rounded profile on the inside. The roof has two unequal hipped roofs clad with red Roman tiles and drainage takes place via steel gutters and downspouts with protruding, rounded ends. On the Rijksstraatweg the gutter on the left runs far beyond the roof and is supported there on a column to prevent water from running off at the point where the window goes around the corner. On each main facade there were two lanterns, one of which has now disappeared. Along the right side facade a staircase has been built, which is closed off on the right by a wall executed in offset brickwork. Just outside the left side facade runs a curved wall to retain the earth embankment. The FRONT FACADE on the Rijksstraatweg has on the right a slightly projecting wall structure with a brickwork plinth running to halfway up the storey. The greater part of the facade to the left of this consists of a 12-pane metal window running around the left corner, in which an opening ticket-window is located. The window has a sandstone window sill which projects slightly at the point of the ticket window. The FRONT FACADE on the Van Randwijckweg is almost entirely taken up by a composite metal frame with a six-pane door in the middle and six-pane sidelights on either side. The door has a solid lower panel, the windows have sandstone window sills. Across each gable end a low wall has been built and covered with a renewed sandstone plate. The narrow northern SIDE FACADE has a high plinth whose brickwork steps upward in stages, parallel to the parapet of the staircase to its right. At the top of the facade is a round window surrounded by a course of visible brickwork and provided with a steel tilt window. A handrail is mounted against the facade. In the southern SIDE FACADE to the left of the window running around the corner with a single light width is a six-pane door as already described. In the offset gable is a round window as described. The INTERIOR of the small building consists of two small rooms, one on each street.
Valuation
KIOSK built in 1938 to the design of B. SCHULTHEISS
-Of architectural historical value as a good typological example of a KIOSK from the Interbellum period, in this case an ANWB information office. The small building stands out because of its very special roof shape with unequal building volumes which is connected to the uneven terrain, and because of the absence of a clear front facade, which is connected to its functioning towards two streets. Besides the typical Nieuwe Bouwen elements such as the use of steel frames and a window running around the corner, the small building also shows more traditionalist elements such as the decorative use of hand-formed brickwork.
-Of urban planning value as part of Plein Mooi Nederland, which has historically grown buildings including villas, middle-class houses and shops and which is characterized by the presence of the high ridge. The small building is located here at the junction of two roads and plays here because of its location, special roof shape and fine detailing a major role in determining the visual character.
-Of cultural historical value because of the purpose of the building which is connected to an infrastructural and tourism development. The office is a reminder of the national border which was here until the Second World War, and of the tourism that appeared here early in the century and is connected to the landscape experienced as un-Dutch.
