Inleiding
Sluis in het Julianakanaal gebouwd in 1934.
De sluis is ter hoogte van Born gesitueerd en gebouwd in opdracht van de Rijkswaterstaat naar een ontwerp van architect O. Reich.
Omschrijving
Betonnen sluis met een lengte van 136 meter. De sluis is van gewapend beton en voorzien van een rechthoekige sluiskom. Aan de noord- en de zuidzijde bevindt zich een sluisgebouw. De stalen hefdeuren zijn opgehangen tussen twee betonnen torens met een overbrugging waarin zich de hefinstallatie bevindt. In de torens en het overbruggingsgedeelte rechthoekige stalen vensterkozijnen met roedeverdeling. De torens en het overbruggingsgedeelte hebben platte daken. Rechthoekige stalen deuren.
In de betonnen brug de authentieke hefinstallatie met grote kamraderen.
Waardering
De sluis in het Julianakanaal ter hoogte van Born is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een technologische en typologische ontwikkeling met een pionierskarakter in de architectuur van sluisbouwwerken in de eerste decennia van de twintigste eeuw. De architectuurhistorische waarden van de sluis worden bepaald door het bijzondere belang voor de geschiedenis van de bouwtechniek, door de betrokkenheid van architect Reich, de esthetische kwaliteiten van diens ontwerp en het innovatieve materiaalgebruik. De sluis is vanwege de situering verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de streek, is van belang voor het aanzien van Born en heeft een historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met het Julianakanaal.
