Inleiding
KANTOOR, gebouwd in 1901 naar ontwerp van W.F.J.H. Bouwman in opdracht van de levensverzekeringsmaatschappij "Noord Braband". De architectuur vertoont kenmerken van neorenaissance en chaletstijl. Het gebouw ligt aan de Grotestraat in de kern van Waalwijk en maakt deel uit van de lintbebouwing.
Omschrijving
Tweelaags blokvormig bakstenen pand op een rechthoekige plattegrond, onder een samengesteld dak. De hoofdmassa heeft een plat dak met dakschilden, gedekt met verbeterde Hollandse pannen en pirons. De linkerhoek aan de straatkant heeft een uitkragend torentje met spits. In de achtergevel is de hoek uitgespaard. Hier bevindt zich de huidige ingang aan een trap in een portaal onder lessenaarsdak. Links van het midden heeft de voorgevel een topgevel met zadeldak. De voorgevel is vijf traveeën breed en voorzien van een rijk gedecoreerde natuurstenen plint met geprofileerde lijsten en gebosseerde vlakken. Op de hoek is de handtekening van de architect uitgebeiteld: "W.F.J.H.Bouman, Architect Tilburg". In de plint grote kelderramen in houten kozijnen met afgeronde hoeken. Deze sierlijke vormgeving wordt herhaald in de natuursteen van de plint. Boven de plint een waterlijst, opklimmend ter plekke van de ramen. Deze ramen zijn hoog en samengesteld: driedelig met bovenlichten gevuld met glas-in-lood. Erboven zijn natuurstenen lateien aangebracht, in de natuursteen zijn accoladebogen uitgehakt. Rechts van het midden is op de begane grond een portiek met natuurstenen trap aangebracht. Daarachter een later gemaakte draaideur. Gelijk lopend met de gevel is boven in de portiekopening een glas-in-loodraam met waaiervormige roeden gemaakt. Op de verdieping boven de portiek een glas-in-loodraam, bij de overige ramen is alleen het bovenlicht gevuld met glas-in-lood. Onder de geprofileerde goot op klossen is in goudkleurige (metalen) letters het opschrift: "1843" en "N.V. NOORD-BRABAND" aangebracht. Boven de ramen van de begane grond is het vervolg "MAATSCHAPPIJ VAN VERZEKERING O/H LEVEN" leesbaar. De topgevel, voorzien van windveren, heeft smalle staande raampjes. De middelste drie, van in totaal vijf zijn hoger en onder een drielobbige boog gezet. In het boogveld een polychroom reliëf waarop het wapen van Brabant en bloemen zijn afgebeeld.
De toren rust op een uitkragende natuursteen console, versierd met bloemmotieven (zonnebloemen). Alle (drie) gevelvlakken hebben ter hoogte van de eerste verdieping een klein uitbuikend balkon met smeedijzeren hek. De torenkamer, ter hoogte van de zolderverdieping is voorzien van ramen met een stenen balustrade. De opbouw met spits is gedekt met daktegels. De overstek rust op grote steunen, daaronder een kroonlijst met polychroom gepleisterde velden. Het geheel wordt bekroond door een lelievormige piron.
Boven de linkerzijgevel een steil zadeldak. In het metselwerk een gevelsteen met opschrift: EERSTE STEEN GELEGD DOOR/ JUDOCUS/ TIMMERMANS PH ZOON/ ANNO 15-8 1901. Op de bel-etage zijn smalle hoge ramen aangebracht, de verdieping heeft grotere ramen. Voor de mopgelijk later aangebrachte ingang in de hoek is een natuurstenen trap aangelegd.
De rechterzijgevel is gepleisterd en bevat enkele ramen met ter plekke van het trappenhuis een groot glas-in-lood raam. In de achtergevel samengestelde ramen, in de topgevel een driepas met gepleisterd veld waarin een voorstelling van het in 1824 afgebrande raadhuis dat op die plek heeft gestaan.
In het interieur is de indeling in grote lijnen bewaard gebleven. In de vertrekken zijn verlaagde plafonds aangebracht, delen van de inrichting verkeren nog in oorspronkelijke staat. Voorbeelden daarvan zijn de betegeling in de hal, de kelder met troggewelfjes en het liggend glas-in-loodraam in het plafond ter plekke van het trappenhuis.
Later aangebrachte waardevolle elementen zijn een tegeltableau in de hal, ter gelegenheid van het 75-jarig bestaan van de maatschappij en een gebrandschilderd glas-in-loodraam in het trappenhuis geschonken bij het 100 jarig bestaan in 1943 van de N.V. NOORD-BRABAND.
Waardering
Het kantoor is van algemeen belang. Het kantoor heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het kantoorgebouw. Het pand is van architectuurhistorisch belang wegens de toegepaste stijlelementen, de rijke detaillering en het materiaalgebruik.

Description
Two-storey block-shaped brick building on a rectangular plan, under a composite roof. The main mass has a flat roof with roof slates, covered with improved Dutch tiles and ornamental roof ridge finials. The left corner at the street front has a projecting tower with a spire. In the rear facade the corner is recessed. Here is situated the current entrance on a staircase in a portico under a lean-to roof. Left of centre the front facade has a topped gable with gabled roof. The front facade is five bays wide and furnished with a richly decorated natural stone plinth with moulded profiles and rusticated surfaces. At the corner the architect's signature is carved: "W.F.J.H.Bouman, Architect Tilburg". In the plinth large basement windows in wooden frames with rounded corners. This elegant design is repeated in the natural stone of the plinth. Above the plinth a drip moulding, rising at the position of the windows. These windows are tall and composite: three-part with fanlights filled with stained glass. Above them natural stone lintels have been applied, accolade arches are carved into the natural stone. Right of centre on the ground floor a portico with natural stone staircase has been installed. Behind it a later made revolving door. In line with the facade, above in the portico opening a stained glass window with fan-shaped glazing bars has been made. On the first floor above the portico a stained glass window, at the remaining windows only the fanlight is filled with stained glass. Below the moulded gutter on corbels the inscription is mounted in gold-coloured (metal) letters: "1843" and "N.V. NOORD-BRABAND". Above the windows of the ground floor the continuation "MAATSCHAPPIJ VAN VERZEKERING O/H LEVEN" is legible. The topped gable, furnished with wind vanes, has narrow vertical windows. The middle three, out of a total of five are taller and set under a trilobed arch. In the arch field a polychrome relief on which the coat of arms of Brabant and flowers are depicted.
The tower rests on a projecting natural stone console, decorated with floral motifs (sunflowers). All (three) facade surfaces have at the height of the first floor a small projecting balcony with wrought iron railing. The tower room, at the height of the attic storey is furnished with windows with a stone balustrade. The structure with spire is covered with roof tiles. The overhang rests on large supports, below which a cornice with polychrome plastered fields. The whole is crowned by a lily-shaped roof ridge finial.
Above the left side facade a steep gabled roof. In the brickwork a facade stone with inscription: FIRST STONE LAID BY/ JUDOCUS/ TIMMERMANS PH ZOON/ ANNO 15-8 1901. On the piano nobile narrow tall windows have been installed, the first floor has larger windows. In front of the possibly later installed entrance in the corner a natural stone staircase has been constructed.
The right side facade is plastered and contains several windows and at the location of the stairwell a large stained glass window. In the rear facade composite windows, in the topped gable a trefoil with plastered field in which a depiction of the town hall which burned down in 1824 and which stood on that site.
In the interior the layout in broad outline has been preserved. In the rooms lowered ceilings have been installed, parts of the fittings are still in original condition. Examples of these are the tiling in the hall, the cellar with barrel vaults and the horizontal stained glass window in the ceiling at the location of the stairwell.
Later added valuable elements are a tile tableau in the hall, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the company and a stained glass window in the stairwell donated at the 100th anniversary in 1943 of the N.V. NOORD-BRABAND.
Assessment
The office is of general importance. The office has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic development and as an example of the typological development of the office building. The building is of architectural-historical importance because of the applied style elements, the rich detailing and the use of materials.
