Inleiding
VILLA, gebouwd in 1932 in expressionistische stijl naar ontwerp van architect J. Klijnen in opdracht van de heer Van Liempt, destijds gemeentesecretaris. Klijnen was één van de architecten die in 1928 uitgenodigd werden om een ontwerp voor een nieuw raadhuis te maken. De weerstand tegen de moderne architectuur van Klijnen was groot zodat voor het raadhuis een ontwerp in traditionalistische stijl van A.J. Kropholler gekozen werd. Van Liempt, voorstander van het ontwerp van Klijnen, gaf deze architect de gelegenheid zijn moderne vormgeving alsnog te realiseren in een ontwerp voor zijn woonhuis.
In 1961 is op de begane grond, aan de achterzijde een kamer toegevoegd. Deze uitbreiding is in eenzelfde vormgeving als die van de hoofdmassa uitgevoerd.
Omschrijving
Het woonhuis heeft een samengestelde bouwmassa op een L-vormige plattegrond. De haaks op elkaar staande delen variëren in hoogte. Elk deel heeft een licht gebogen dak met groot overstek, gedekt met bitumen. De dakconstructie bestaat uit gebogen stalen I-profielen, daarop zijn houten balken gelegd. De gevels zijn wit gepleisterd op een plint van witte, geglazuurde bakstenen. De bouwmassa aan de straat is drie lagen hoog en heeft een rechthoekige, smalle plattegrond. In de voorgevel zijn een brede deur en ten opzichte van elkaar verspringende ramen aangebracht. Het haaks daarop staande deel is twee lagen hoog.
De gevel aan de straatkant heeft ter hoogte van de verdieping een uitbouw, in de rechterzijgevel zijn op de begane grond en verdieping respectievelijk terras- en balkondeuren in een terugliggend gedeelte aangebracht. Het blokvormige bouwvolume daarachter ligt evenwijdig aan de bouwmassa aan de straat. Dit gedeelte is in 1961 gebouwd en één laag hoog. De ramen in dit gedeelte zijn als in de rest van het huis rechthoekig en hebben smalle boven- en zijlichten.
De achtergevel wordt grotendeels in beslag genomen door de latere aanbouw. Erboven, in het oudere gedeelte bevinden zich enkele liggende ramen.
De hoge linkerzijgevel is nagenoeg blind. Ter plekke van de hal met trappenhuis bevindt zich een groot raam. Alle deuren en ramen zijn omlijst met randen van vertande rode baksteen.
In het interieur is de oorspronkelijke indeling bewaard gebleven. De hal aan de voorzijde van het huis heeft een klein trapje naar de woonruimte, de gehele begane grond ligt hoger dan de straat. Links bevindt zich de keuken, rechts de woonkamer die in 1961 fors is uitgebreid.
In de hal is een trap naar een kleine overloop aan de voorzijde. Op de verdieping bevinden zich aan de overloop enkele kleine kamers en een badkamer. Op de tweede verdieping bevinden zich nog twee kamers, aan weerszijden van de trap. Tussen deze kamers ligt aan de achterkant van het huis een klein balkon.
De constructie van I-profielen met houten balken is inwendig op diverse plaatsen zichtbaar gebleven. Het huis is gedeeltelijk onderkelderd.
Waardering
De villa is van algemeen belang. De villa is van cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van een bestuurlijke en typologische ontwikkeling, waarbij binnen de gemeente Waalwijk de traditionalistische en de meer progressieve vormgeving elk hun voor- en tegenstanders hadden, een controverse die is gematerialiseerd in respectievelijk het raadhuis en de onderhavige villa. De villa heeft architectuurhistorische waarde wegens de bijzondere vormgeving met vrije plattegrond en bijzondere dakvormen, alsmede vanwege de plaats die het werk inneemt in het oeuvre van de architect J. Klijnen. Het is in zijn geheel gaaf bewaard gebleven en zeldzaam qua vormgeving.

Introduction
VILLA, built in 1932 in expressionist style designed by architect J. Klijnen commissioned by Mr Van Liempt, then municipal secretary. Klijnen was one of the architects invited in 1928 to design a new town hall. The resistance to Klijnen's modern architecture was strong so that for the town hall a design in traditionalist style by A.J. Kropholler was chosen. Van Liempt, a supporter of Klijnen's design, gave this architect the opportunity to still realise his modern design in a design for his residential house.
In 1961 a room was added on the ground floor at the rear. This extension was executed in the same design as that of the main mass.
Description
The residential house has a composite building mass on an L-shaped ground plan. The parts at right angles to each other vary in height. Each part has a slightly curved roof with large overhang, covered with bitumen. The roof structure consists of curved steel I-profiles, on which wooden beams are laid. The facades are white plastered on a plinth of white, glazed bricks. The building mass at the street is three storeys high and has a rectangular, narrow ground plan. In the front facade a wide door and windows staggered in relation to each other are placed. The part at right angles to it is two storeys high.
The facade on the street side has an extension at the level of the first floor, in the right side facade terrace and balcony doors respectively are placed on the ground floor and first floor in a recessed section. The block-shaped building volume behind it is parallel to the building mass at the street. This section was built in 1961 and is one storey high. The windows in this section are rectangular as in the rest of the house and have narrow fanlights and side lights.
The rear facade is largely occupied by the later extension. Above it, in the older section are some horizontal windows.
The high left side facade is almost blind. At the location of the hall with stairwell is a large window. All doors and windows are framed with borders of toothed red brick.
In the interior the original layout has been preserved. The hall at the front of the house has a small flight of steps to the living space, the entire ground floor is higher than the street. On the left is the kitchen, on the right the living room which was considerably enlarged in 1961.
In the hall is a staircase to a small landing at the front. On the first floor are a few small rooms and a bathroom at the landing. On the second floor are two more rooms on either side of the staircase. Between these rooms is a small balcony at the back of the house.
The structure of I-profiles with wooden beams has remained internally visible in various places. The house is partly basement.
Valuation
The villa is of general importance. The villa is of cultural-historical importance as an expression of an administrative and typological development, whereby within the municipality of Waalwijk the traditionalist and the more progressive design each had their supporters and opponents, a controversy that has been materialised in respectively the town hall and the present villa. The villa has architectural-historical value because of the distinctive design with free ground plan and distinctive roof forms, as well as because of the place the work occupies in the oeuvre of architect J. Klijnen. It has been preserved intact in its entirety and is rare in terms of design.
