Omschrijving

Description

The Roman Catholic CRUCIFORM BASILICA consists of a three-aisled nave with a transept, choir, three-sided apse and two side chapels. Against the southern end wall of the transept stands the sacristy. At the front a square tower with entrance and clock. Before the left side aisle a hexagonal stair turret.

The church is built in red brick under a composite gabled roof with slates in Maas roof covering and an overhanging gutter. In the roof of the sacristy and the apse small dormers are placed. The tower has a large spire with slates in Maas roof covering and four small spires at the corners. The facades are articulated by tapering buttresses with pointed arch windows between them. Also the sound holes in the tower, the spare fields, the entrance and the larger windows are closed by pointed arches. In the tower a bell frame with three modern (unprotected) bells and a bell by an anonymous founder, 1456, diam. 55 cm.

The base of the church is blind with the exception of the entrance. Above a drip moulding the windows are placed. In the end walls of the transept and in the front facade of the tower large windows are placed. Above the windows in the transept are the gable tops articulated by pointed arch-shaped spare fields.

The entrance, in the middle of the front facade, consists of a clamped double wooden door with a fanlight under a Tudor arch. In the connecting section of the church to the parsonage small pointed arch windows are placed.

The sacristy is built under a hipped roof with slates in Maas roof covering and has right-angled windows under pointed arch fanlights with mortared traceries.

The interior of the church is roofed by cross-ribbed vaults on square columns. The walls and arch fields are plastered, the columns and ribs are not. The original tile floor is still present. Further preserved are among others: the original seating plan with benches; the sculptured high altar of sandstone, marble and cast bronze; the sculptured pulpit of marble, sandstone and wrought iron; the communion bench of sandstone and marble; seven wooden polychrome holy figures; one polychrome holy figure of stone; the stained glass; the overhanging wooden organ gallery; the (unprotected) organ and organ case and the Stations of the Cross consisting of oil paintings on copper.

Valuation

The Roman Catholic is of general cultural, architectural-historical and urban design importance:

- as an exponent of the building explosion of Catholic churches and parsonages after the restoration of the Bishopric hierarchy in 1853

- as a representative example of a neo-Gothic church

- as the highlight in the oeuvre of H. Kroes

- as part of the harmonious ensemble that the church forms with the parsonage

- because of the image-defining location in Boerhaar

- because of the integrity of the exterior and in particular the interior
