Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Waar buiten de bebouwde kom van Willemstad aan de zuidoostelijke uitvalsweg, de Landpoortstraat overgaat in de Steenweg, ligt in het ravelijn uit ca. 1749 een MONUMENT uit 1918. Het herinnert onder andere aan de afbraak in dat jaar van de Landpoort, gelegen in het vestingfront tussen de bastions Friesland en Overijssel. In het ravelijn liggen ook twee kanonslopen uit 1811.
Omschrijving.
Het gedenkteken bestaat uit een vierkante betonnen basis met dito witgeschilderde sokkel van drie treden, waarboven een kleine natuurstenen obelisk is opgebouwd uit vijf blokken, gestut door vier consoles. De spaarvelden van de obelisk bevatten elk twee basreliëfs: boven afwisselend het heraldische wapen van Nederland en Willemstad, onder gekruiste objecten ter illustratie van de met zwart ingevulde tekstregels in de sokkel. Het monument ligt met een rechte zijde parallel langs de weg. De teksten met corresponderende objecten en heraldiek gaan als volgt:
wegzijde: MOBILISATIE 1914-1918 LEGER EN VOLK EEN! - gekruiste kanonslopen en kroontje - wapen Willemstad; Landpoortzijde: O. NEDERLAND! LET OP U SAECK DE TIJT EN STONT IS DAER! - gekruiste degens en olijftak - wapen Nederland; grachtzijde: ONTHULT BIJ HET AFBREKEN VAN DE LANDPOORT. AUGUSTUS 1918. - helm, schop en houweel - wapen Willemstad; landzijde: HET VADERLAND GETROUW TOT IN DEN DOOD - geweren en vaandels - wapen Nederland.
Waardering.
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als herinnering aan de Stelling aan het Haringvliet die de vesting Holland tegen aanvallen in de rug moest beschermen. In het bijzonder herinnert het aan de opheffing in 1918 van het garnizoen en de afbraak van de Landpoort in hetzelfde jaar. Verder is het een schakel tussen heden en verleden. Het object heeft kunsthistorische waarde wegens het belang voor de iconografie van oorlogsmonumenten. Het heeft ensemblewaarde door de plaatsing tezamen met de kanonslopen in het ravelijn op zichtafstand van de gesloopte Landpoort. Het monument is gaaf bewaard gebleven.

Where outside the built-up area of Willemstad on the south-eastern arterial road, the Landpoortstraat transitions into the Steenweg, lies in the ravelin from ca. 1749 a MONUMENT from 1918. It commemorates, among other things, the demolition in that year of the Landpoort, located in the fortification front between the bastions Friesland and Overijssel. In the ravelin also lie two cannon barrels from 1811.
Description.
The memorial consists of a square concrete base with likewise whitewashed plinth of three steps, above which a small natural stone obelisk is constructed from five blocks, supported by four consoles. The spandrels of the obelisk each contain two bas-reliefs: above alternately the heraldic arms of the Netherlands and Willemstad, below crossed objects to illustrate the text lines in the plinth filled in black. The monument lies with a straight side parallel along the road. The texts with corresponding objects and heraldry are as follows:
road side: MOBILISATION 1914-1918 ARMY AND PEOPLE ONE! - crossed cannon barrels and crown - arms of Willemstad; Landpoort side: O. NETHERLANDS! Valuation.
The object is of general importance. It possesses cultural-historical value as a remembrance of the Stelling aan het Haringvliet which was to protect the fortress Holland against attacks from the rear. In particular it commemorates the disbandment in 1918 of the garrison and the demolition of the Landpoort in the same year. Furthermore it is a link between present and past. The object has art-historical value due to its importance for the iconography of war monuments. It has ensemble value through its placement together with the cannon barrels in the ravelin at a visible distance from the demolished Landpoort. The monument has been preserved intact.
