Inleiding.
Aan de Oostdijk liggen tussen Willemstad en Tonnekreek over een afstand van circa drie kilometer de zogenaamde MURALTMUREN. Zij zijn in 1929 in opdracht van het waterschap Ruigenhil gebouwd na een stormvloed in 1926. Het is een dijkverhoging van gewapend beton volgens het 'systeem de Muralt', genoemd naar de ingenieur van het waterschap Schouwen, Jhr. R.R.L. de Muralt, die dit systeem na de stormvloed van 12 maart 1906 vooral in Zeeland toepaste. De muren zijn in delen van 2.0 tot hoogstens 3.50 m lengte samengesteld met een tussenruimte van 0.25 à 0.30 m. Hierover zijn glijdingsplaten van gewapend beton gestampt, die ten minste 5 cm buiten en boven de muur en boven de voetplaat uitsteken. De voetplaat heeft aan de zeezijde een breedte van 0.50 à 1.50 m, aan de binnenzijde van 0.20 à 0.50 m.

De muraltmuren op de Oostdijk zijn aan de buitenzijde van de kruin, geplaatst en ter plaatse gegoten. De muurdelen hebben een lengte van 3.0 m, de voetplaat aan de zeezijde is 0.90 m breed, aan de binnenzijde ca. 0.45 m breed. De muur loopt als een drie kilometer langgerekt lint over de dijk slechts onderbroken door Oostdijk nummer 1, een voormalig sluiswachtershuis aan de Bovensluis met een gepotdekselde schuur voor het opbergen van materialen voor het dijkonderhoud.
Waardering.
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van de waterstaatkundige ontwikkeling en de waterbeheersing in het kleigebied en vanwege de typologie. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van de technische ontwikkeling van de waterbeheersing. Het bezit ensemblewaarde als karakteristiek onderdeel van de dijk. Introduction.
On the Oostdijk between Willemstad and Tonnekreek over a distance of approximately three kilometres lie the so-called MURALT WALLS. They were built in 1929 on the orders of the waterboard Ruigenhil following a storm surge in 1926. It is a dike heightening of reinforced concrete according to the 'de Muralt system', named after the engineer of the waterboard Schouwen, Jhr. R.R.L. de Muralt, who applied this system especially in Zeeland after the storm surge of 12 March 1906. The walls are composed in sections of 2.0 to at most 3.50 m length with a gap of 0.25 to 0.30 m. Over this are placed sliding plates of reinforced concrete, which protrude at least 5 cm outward and above the wall and above the footing plate.
