Inleiding.
VLASROTERIJ, gelegen ten westen van de Tonsedijk aan het water de Tonnekreek, dateert uit ca. 1936 en is een warmwaterroterij bestemd voor het 'roten' van vlas. Bij het roten vindt door verwarming een biologisch proces plaats waardoor de pectines, de lijmstof die de vezelbundels met de houtpijp, de kern van de stengel verbindt, oplossen. Een van de drie manieren van roten is die in een warmwaterroterij. De warmwaterroterij is grotendeel van beton gebouwd met diverse rootbassins variërend in grootte. Doorgaans konden deze bassins 5000 kg strovlas bevatten. De bassins werden op de grond gebouwd met elk afzonderlijk een ijzeren in- of uitlaatdeur, die met een rubberen band waterdicht kon worden afgesloten. Door een systeem van verwarming door een stookketel en in samenhang met een koud- en warmwaterreservoir werd in de hermetisch afgesloten bassins in verschillende fasen en temperatuurhoogtes het rootproces voltrokken. De produktie van vlas, een nijverheid gebaseerd op de landbouw, was in de negentiende eeuw en tot vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog een belangrijke bron van bestaan. Het eerste zelfstandige vlasbedrijf in de streek dateert van 1830. De roterij is al geruime tijd niet meer in gebruik en doet dienst als opslagplaats. De schoorsteen is onlangs gesloopt.
Omschrijving.
De roterij op rechthoekige plattegrond is gebouwd van beton. In de dwarsgevel ligt de ingang met schuifdeuren naar de verwerkingshal die gedekt is door een zadeldak, belegd met oud-Hollandse pannen. Aan weerszijden liggen, plat afgedekt de roterijen, waarbinnen de rootbassins liggen met in de zijmuur vier kleine en in de uitbouw twee grote inlaatdeuren voor het vlas. Hoger in de muur liggen de inspectieruimtes die door een trap bereikbaar zijn. Tussen de borstwering op de plat afgedekte roterijen lag het koudwaterreservoir.
Waardering.
De vlasroterij is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als exponent van de ontwikkeling van de nijverheid in de streek en vanwege de typologische ontwikkeling van de vlasroterij. Als vooroorlogs bedrijfspand is het van belang voor de architectuurgeschiedenis van het industriële gebouw. Het heeft ensemblewaarde vanwege de functionele samenhang der samenstellende delen en de landschappelijke samenhang met de nabijgelegen Tonnekreek. De roterij is in hoofdvorm bewaard gebleven en zeldzaam.

Introduction.
FLAX RETTING WORKS, located west of the Tonsedijk at the water of the Tonnekreek, dates from circa 1936 and is a warm-water retting works intended for the 'retting' of flax. During retting, heating causes a biological process in which the pectines, the adhesive substance that connects the fibre bundles with the woody pith, the core of the stem, dissolve. One of three methods of retting is that in a warm-water retting works. The warm-water retting works is largely built of concrete with various retting basins varying in size. Ordinarily these basins could contain 5000 kg of straw flax. Description.
The works on a rectangular floor plan is built of concrete. In the transverse gable lies the entrance with sliding doors to the processing hall which is covered by a gabled roof, laid with old-Dutch tiles. On either side lie, flat-roofed, the retting works, within which lie the retting basins with in the side wall four small and in the extension two large inlet doors for the flax. Higher in the wall lie the inspection rooms which are accessible by a staircase. Between the breast wall on the flat-roofed retting works lay the cold-water reservoir.
Valuation.
The flax retting works is of public interest. The object has cultural-historical value as an exponent of the development of industry in the region and on account of the typological development of the flax retting works. As a pre-war business premises it is of importance for the architectural history of the industrial building. It has ensemble value on account of the functional coherence of the constituent parts and the landscape coherence with the nearby Tonnekreek. The works has remained substantially intact and is rare.
