Inleiding

Introduction

FARMHOUSE COMPLEX on the Tonsedijk, the western closure of the Nieuwe Fijnaartse Polder which was diked in 1558. The complex is of the West Brabant type and consists of a barn with an adjoining residential house with cheese cellar and a detached summer house. It was built between 1760 and 1780.

Description

The single-storey residential house is constructed from handmade brick with a weathered whitewashed plaster layer. The gabled roof between spout gables is covered with Dutch pan tiles and has a lower eaves line at the front gable. Within it is the front door with geometrically-divided fanlight and to the right a twelve-pane sash window. To the left are two six-pane sash windows, below which are two barred openings of the cheese cellar. In the side gables are two-, three- and eight-pane windows; also a painted sundial. Wall anchors in all walls including one dated wall anchor in the higher rear gable. Within it lie two tall fifteen-pane sash windows and a bolection window with a single frame above at the junction of the house against the gable of the central longitudinal barn. This is partly timber and brick and has a half-hipped roof with diamond-shaped asbestos-cement tiles. In the gables are high carriage doors, at the courtyard under a lean-to roof. In the long side gables are four-part segmental-arched stable windows and wooden doors.

The summer house lies on the road side. It has a gabled roof with cross tiles between small three-step-crowned spout gables. The brick walls with wall anchors have irregular window openings, some of which are blocked.

In the residential house is a valuable interior with a wooden cupboard and alcove wall with panel doors separated by pilaster panels with plinth and cornice.

Assessment

The complex is of cultural-historical value as an example of a socio-economic development and from the perspective of agricultural business history. It has architectural-historical value because of the typological rarity and integrity of the constituent building volumes in their functional relationship. It is significant because of its distinctive siting, connected to the development of the region. The complex is important because of the well-preserved interior and exterior and the historical significance.
