Description
Introduction.
STATION BUILDING, built in 1854 and extended in 1885. Neo-Classical so-called 'Waterstaat station' on the railway line Roosendaal-Dordrecht. The single-storey building executed for the 'Société anonyme des chemins de fers d'Anvers à Rotterdam' was enlarged under the 'Maatschappij tot exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen' with an additional storey and a vestibule and only then acquired its present form.
Description.
A one- and two-storey building on a roughly rectangular plan, built of brick, rendered and whitewashed, provided with gently sloping gabled roofs with overhanging eaves on scroll corbels, covered with grey improved Dutch tiles. The two-storey section has a central risalit with a pediment-like gable and is articulated by rusticated corner strips and horizontal mouldings. It has on the ground floor and first floor arched, broad T-windows and in the gable a cast-iron rose window. In the side gables undivided grid windows. The single-storey wings on either side of this section have the same ornamental treatment, T-windows and cast-iron grid windows in the gables. On the railway side the window openings on the ground floor are provided with a fourfold division. On the first floor there are three groups of narrow windows coupled two by two under a semicircular relieving arch. Here on the right extension an outbuilding under a flat roof has been added, which by side windows provides a view of the platforms. The gabled roof shows a later roof dormer. The interior of the building has been completely modernized. Next to the station there is a storage building built of brick with a gabled roof and improved Dutch tiles. The masonry has horizontal grey speckled courses and window and door openings under lintels.
