Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Omschrijving.

Description
Introduction.
The R.C. CHURCH of St. Laurentius was built in 1906 against the mid-15th-century tower of the demolished predecessor. This tower is already a national monument. The church was built in Neo-Gothic style to the design of professor of electrotechnology G.J. van Swaay, who also executed the front facade of the basilica in Oudenbosch. The externally very austere building is partly inspired by Cuypers' since-demolished Hippolytuskerk in Delft and contains a rich inventory, which is a reflection of the history of the agricultural settlement. The church was restored after 1976.
Description.
Three-aisled cruciform church, executed in brick with some use of natural stone. The building consists of a nave of five bays, a barely projecting transept and a choir bay with a slightly lower 7/12 closed choir. The roofs consist of gabled, lean-to and hipped roofs, covered with slates. The nave walls have horizontal mouldings and pointed-arch windows with three-part tracery, the transept windows broad windows with brick central mullion and bridges. The choir closure, flanked by adjacent rooms and lower side chapels, has lancet windows. To the left and right of the tower entrance portals and on the north side a baptismal chapel. The roof turret was somewhat simplified during restoration around 1975.
The interior has round columns. These support the wall arches above which are the niches of a gallery and three-part clerestory windows. A lower choir closure connects via a triumphal arch to the choir bay. Nave and side aisles, in contrast to the Delft example, are stone-vaulted with ribbed cross vaults and a star vault in the crossing. The roof covering is made up of iron trusses.
The church possesses a rich neo-gothic inventory consisting of altars, stained glass windows and furnishings and finally a complete polychrome mural decoration by Jan Oosterman (1928 onwards), concentrated around the life of St. Laurentius, the Holy Family, Christ and St. Bernardus (in the Middle Ages the church was served by Cistercians). In the choir a high altar in marble and bronze by J. Brom, with representations from the Eucharist and the martyrdom of Laurentius. The windows by F. Nicolas contain representations of the seven sacraments. In the choir bay windows of the Transfiguration on Mount Thabor, the Resurrection and paintings of the Last Supper, Crucifixion and the four Evangelists. Against the triumphal arch altars made by J. Custers around 1907 of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, above which paintings of Christ before Pilate, the Mocking and in the top of the triumphal arch above a 16th-century cross the Kingship of Christ. In the northern transept chapel the Holy Family altar by J. Custers, a window of the Presentation in the Temple and a large tile tableau of the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple by J. 't Hooft and Labouchêre in Delft. Paintings of the Holy Family and the life of Laurentius. In the southern chapel a marble Bernardus altar by J. Custers and tile tableaus of the Crucified Christ whom Bernardus embraces and Bernardus in ecstasy before Mary. In the windows the life of the saint and a tile tableau of Bernardus blessing water and bread. The paintings show family members of Bernardus. In choir and chapels a terrazzo floor with coats of arms, symbols and foliage borders. Pulpit and communion benches from the workshop of Custers. On the pulpit Evangelists, the teaching Christ and the Holy Ghost, on the communion rail Eucharistic symbols. In the transept four confessionals with painting of penitents above. The columns in nave and transept have limestone capitals from the atelier of De Vriendt in Antwerp, who also made the plaster Stations of the Cross in the side aisles, set in frames of tiles. The gallery niches show paintings of Apostles and Church Fathers and representations from the hidden and public life of Jesus. On the west wall the cycle concludes with the Fall of Man and the Expulsion from Paradise and finally the Last Judgment. In the side aisles the bronze serpent and the Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. In the nave also Dominic receiving the Rosary.
In the church further neo-gothic benches, wrought-iron chandeliers, and many statues and groups including a Pietà (presumably by Custers). Neo-gothic organ case concealing a 1906 rebuilt organ from the Benedictine Abbey near Antwerp, of which old pipework by Steven from Duffel would have been transferred to Bornem.
Valuation.
The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the village church; it is also an example of technical development through the application of an iron roof truss. The building has architectural-historical importance through its style and detailing and is of art-historical importance through the complete inventory, which makes it not only a sample collection of the work of ecclesiastical art studios but also an exemplar of Catholic religious beliefs. The building is also of importance as an example of the oeuvre of the architect and technician Van Swaay. It has ensemble values due to its distinctive location and beacon function, connected with the development of the church village in the early 20th century, in particular the influence exercised by wealthy Catholic farmers and manufacturers. It is of importance due to the architectural-historical and building-technical rarity, the complete interior also makes the building extremely rare.
