Omschrijving
Inleiding.
P.A.M. Mastboom. In beide panden vonden enige indelingswijzigingen plaats.
Omschrijving.

Description
Introduction.
Double townhouse situated on the west side of Kerkstraat, in the centre of Oud-Gastel. The building is aligned with the street building line and is located directly opposite the Laurentiuskerk. The building was constructed in phases. The four-bay-wide section at no. 8 dates from 1844, during the construction of which use was made of an older basement complex, possibly from the 18th century. In 1904, the five-bay-wide no. 6 was added alongside the street in the place of a washhouse and stable. With this new construction, seamless connection was made to the sober Neoclassicist-style front facade of the older no. 8. The foundation stone for the newer section was laid by Jan. P.A.M. Mastboom. No. 6 was added as a dwelling for the elderly Mrs Mastboom. The section at no. 8 had as its first owner Johannes Mastboom (1785), mayor of Oud-Gastel. Before that it was a café. The notable Mastboom family played a very large role in Oud-Gastel. As early as 1774, the brewer family had settled in Oud-Gastel from Wouw. It would supply several mayors to this place (the last mayor Mastboom died around the middle of the twentieth century). In the building at Kerkstraat 8, the insurance company 'Zekerheid geeft rust' was founded in 1863 by the Mastboom family. The complex has undergone some changes over time. At no. 6, various reconstructions of authentic elements that had been lost were applied in recent years. At the rear there is a renewed veranda in authentic style. In both buildings some changes to the layout took place.
Description.
The double townhouse has an L-shaped floor plan because the building at no. 8 extends further to the rear. There are two storeys and an attic storey which is contained within hipped roofs which are covered at the front with suppressed half-barrel tiles and at the rear with fish-scale tiles. On the ridge there are a total of four cemented chimney stacks. The facades are partly rendered in bond block work (front side) and partly laid in cross bond (other facades). They are provided with rendered plinths and are finished at the top by an identical main cornice with a wooden cornice. Within the front facade the main cornice is provided with consoles. The windows mostly contain a two-pane sash window (first storey) and a two-pane stolp window with an identical fanlight (second storey). Frames are provided with a beaded profile. The drip mouldings are executed in hardstone. At the rear the windows are provided with a one-and-a-half-brick deep reveal. At the front they have a rendered quoin with diamond head (first storey) and a rendered decorative moulding (second storey). The stained glass present within the interior and exterior of no. 8 contains bird motifs. The drip mouldings within the front facade are rendered. The front facade is asymmetrically arranged and has on the far right the wide segmental arch entrance of no. 6. This has a hardstone doorstep and identical door-posts as well as a younger double panelled door. Above the moulded lintel there is a two-pane fanlight which is filled with stained glass. Within the second bay (viewed from the left) is the entrance of no. 8 which is provided with a hardstone doorstep, a younger panelled door, a moulded lintel and a single-pane fanlight which is filled with stained glass. The first storey furthermore contains a series of seven identical windows, of which the example to the left of the entrance of no. 8 is again filled with authentic stained glass. Between the seventh and eighth bay there is a hardstone facade stone with the inscription: FIRST STONE/LAID BY JAN:/P:A:M: MASTBOOM/1904. The second storey contains a series of nine identical windows. The facade furthermore contains an equal number of attic windows which are slightly arched and set within the main cornice. These windows have a rendered frame and a three-pane window.
The right gable wall adjoins the adjacent building to the right of the townhouse. The left gable wall has centrally in the first storey a window with a frame with shutter rebate. The window contains an eight-pane sash window, has above a roller blind and is furthermore provided with a rendered drip moulding. There is a small WC window with a single-pane casement. The second storey has on the left two windows as below and centrally a stairwell window which is provided with a glazing bar frame and filled with stained glass. The rear facade projects substantially forward at no. 8 and has there within the first storey three windows, of which the two right-hand examples have a shutter rebate frame and a T-sash window. The left window has a frame with beaded profile and a fixed single-pane window with an identical fanlight. The window contains a pane with etched decorative motifs including a medallion form. The second storey contains two windows with a T-sash window and frames with shutter rebate. At the very top there are two attic windows as before.
The left gable wall of the projecting rear building has a garden entrance with a hardstone doorstep and identical door-posts as well as above a moulded lintel a multi-pane fanlight. This fanlight is provided with a decorative glazing bar pattern and filled with partly plain, etched and coloured glass.
In the rear facade of the scullery there is a garden entrance with a hardstone doorstep and identical door-posts, a single-pane panelled door, a moulded lintel and a two-pane fanlight. The door is provided with an etched pane with decorative patterns. Because the said entrances connect with one another they have a shared wooden canopy which is provided with bevelled edges and a corbel. The rear facade of no. 6 is set back and has on the far right a newly completed veranda in authentic style.
To the left of this is a wide garden entrance with a double single-pane panelled door, two single-pane sidelights with panelled base and three fanlights which are filled with stained glass. The narrower fanlights are two-pane, the wider fanlight is six-pane. On the entrance adjoins at the top an authentic wooden roller blind box. The far left of the facade contains a kitchen entrance with sidelights and fanlights. These are newly filled. The second storey is on the left provided with a wide window with a central single-pane window with an identical fanlight and on each side a narrow two-pane sidelight. On the right there is an internal 'balcony' with corbel arch opening. Within the rear facade there is here a window as on the left. The facade contains on the far left a small window with a modern single-pane casement. Furthermore, at the very top there are two attic windows as before.
The interior contains a large number of authentic elements. At no. 6, various elements have been reconstructed, in part attempting to restore the authentic character. Original here are various panelled doors within moulded frames. The interconnected rooms are separated from one another by a double sliding door with single-pane windows and identical sidelights as well as a thirteen-pane fanlight. These components are filled with stained glass. The front room contains a grey marble fireplace mantel with white marble consoles. The moulded frames of the stucco ceiling are original. Within the second front room there is a grey marble fireplace mantel with red marble detailing including two columns. The stucco ceiling has authentic moulded frames. In the corridor behind this room is a partly white marble and partly granite tiled floor. There is a Delft blue small fountain with bird motifs. The walls are provided with a tiled wall with timber wainscoting of faceted tiles and a closing meandering moulding. Above this are blue/white tiles with hunting motifs. Above this too there is a meandering moulding. The tiles are cold-grouted. The larger bedrooms on the first floor contain authentic stucco ceilings with a central rosette, moulded and panelled frames (one of the ceilings is boxed in). In one of these rooms there is a grey marble fireplace mantel with red marble detailing. The fireplace mantel in the second bedroom is boxed in. The attic contains Dutch roof trusses and has a boarded roof structure. The basement is provided with barrel vaults on iron beams and tiled with grey and black terracotta tiles. At no. 8 there are also several authentic panelled doors within moulded frames (the doors originally painted with bird and flower motifs). The living room on the rear side has a rich stucco ceiling with decorative mouldings, panel divisions and centrally a recessed circular field with rosette. In this room there is a black marble fireplace mantel (from elsewhere). Towards the corridor the room contains an entrance with a double and panelled swing door. In the corridor which adjoins the vestibule is an authentic white marble floor with granite components and a star form as decorative motif. The authentic stucco ceiling contains a lozenge-shaped rosette with star and flower motifs. The draught door between corridor and vestibule has a stained glass-filled window. The scullery contains a tiled floor with perspective cube forms. The large bedroom on the first floor has a stucco ceiling with central rosette and decorative mouldings. There is a grey marble fireplace mantel with white marble consoles. The landing has a stucco ceiling with moulded frames and cherubim in the corners. The attic has a roof structure with hewn carpenters' marks and a boxed-in construction with curved timbers. The upper part was probably renewed in 1904. The basement contains two barrel vaults as well as cut vaults. There is furthermore an elongated corridor with barrel vault. The walls are covered with white tiles.
Valuation.
The object is of general importance. It is of cultural-historical significance because of the former relationship with the Mastboom family which had the double house built in phases. This family played a large role within the history of Oud-Gastel. In the building at no. 8, Mastboom founded the insurance company 'Zekerheid geeft rust'. The object has architectural-historical value because of the aesthetic qualities of the design and detailing, the exceptional use of materials as well as the coherence between the well-preserved main form and rich interior elements from the period of construction. Of particular character is the stained glass present within various entrances and windows at no. 8 which is provided with bird motifs. The object has ensemble value because of its situation, forming a characteristic component of the historic building development on Kerkstraat in Oud-Gastel and because of its prominent location directly opposite the monumental Laurentiuskerk with which it forms a harmonious, historic unity. The object has value in terms of integrity and recognisability, as it is of importance because of the quality of the constituent components, consisting of a double townhouse with a rendered front facade and various decorative motifs.
