Inleiding
Voormalige OPENBARE LAGERE JONGENSSCHOOL, gelegen aan de Marialaan te Susteren, is in 1921 gebouwd in de stijl van de Amsterdamse School naar ontwerp van architect J. Wielders uit Sittard. De aannemer was firma B. Muyres en Zonen te Sittard. De school is speciaal gebouwd voor de hoofdzakelijk protestantse en niet-religieuze kinderen van spoorwegpersoneel, dat werkzaam was op het rangeerterrein te Susteren bij de afvoer van gedolven kolen uit de Mijnstreek. Het oorspronkelijke ontwerp was voor een jongens- en meisjesschool. Het pand is tot 1984 gebruikt als school en biedt nu onderdak aan diverse educatieve en werkgelegenheidsprojecten. Het voormalige schoolplein is ingericht als park.
Omschrijving
De JONGENSSCHOOL heeft op hoofdlijnen een L-vormige plattegrond in twee bouwlagen onder mansardedaken en dakschilden met Hollandse pannen en is gedeeltelijk onder een plat dak. Het pand heeft een opstand van gelige baksteen in kruisverband met een rode plint. Divers siermetselwerk in de gevels. In de gevels bevinden zich rechthoekige houten kozijnen met roedeverdeling en bovenlichten. De vensters en deuren liggen onder betonlateien.
De VOORGEVEL heeft rechts een volume met de hoofdentree vanaf de straat. Links hiervan ligt de rest van de voorgevel terug.
De hoofdentree ligt verdiept tussen afgeronde gevelvlakken. De entree heeft een dubbele houten deur onder een bovenlicht en is bereikbaar via hardstenen treden. Rechts van de entree is een venster met zij- en bovenlichten. De hoeken van dit gevelvlak zijn afgerond en ondersteunen een bakgoot. In de tweede laag bevinden zich twee vensters met zijlichten onder grote schuine strekken. De LINKERZIJGEVEL tussen beide voorgevels is één laag hoog en heeft een niet authentieke deur met authentiek bovenlicht en naast authentieke vensters. De vensters en de deur liggen in een driezijdige erker. De deur gaf oorspronkelijk toegang tot de speelplaats. Het terugliggende linkerdeel van de VOORGEVEL heeft in de eerste laag zeven vensters met zijlichten onder lateien, waartussen zich lisenen bevinden onder dekstenen.
In de tweede laag bevinden zich zes driedelige vensters en een half driedelig venster, onder een bakgoot. Tussen de vensters bevinden zich halfronde gecementeerde kolommen. Rechts van de vensters loopt het dak lager door en is er halverwege de vensters een goot.
De LINKERZIJGEVEL van de school ligt aan de rechterzijde iets terug en heeft per bouwlaag een deur. Het linkerdeel is blind, waarvoor een klein volume van één laag staat onder een plat dak.
De ACHTERGEVEL bestaat uit vier grote traveeën met de vensters van de klaslokalen onder een plat dak. Geheel rechts bevindt zich een schoorsteen. Links van de klaslokalen ligt een volume iets terug en heeft in de eerste laag een gecementeerd gevelvlak en in de tweede laag een venster.
De RECHTERZIJGEVEL heeft geheel rechts een uitspringend volume van twee bouwlagen met rijen kleine vensters, van elkaar gescheiden door een gecementeerde laag. Links in dit volume bevindt zich een dubbele deur en in de tweede laag een dubbel venster. In de VOORGEVEL van dit volume bevindt zich per laag een venster. Het linkerdeel van de RECHTERZIJGEVEL heeft rechts een volume van twee lagen met een klein venster en een hoog, smal en iets driehoekig trappenhuisvenster onder een kleine driehoekige verhoging van de gevel met siermetselwerk. Links hiervan is de gevel één laag hoog en heeft een klein venster.
Recht van de voorgevel met entree bevindt zich een HEKWERK, dit is gebouwd in baksteen met kolommen, waartussen een smeedijzeren hekwerk is geplaatst.
De STRUCTUUR van het INTERIEUR is in hoge mate in tact.
Het volume met de hoofdentree bevat de hal en het trappenhuis.
In het terugliggende volume zijn de klaslokalen met aan de straatzijde een gang.
WAARDEVOLLE INTERIEURONDERDELEN zijn onder meer het trappenhuis met smeedijzeren balustrade, de terrazzovloeren, de tegellambrisering.

De OPENBARE LAGERE JONGENSSCHOOL te Susteren bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van openbare lagere scholen. De school is speciaal gebouwd voor de hoofdzakelijk protestantse en niet-religieuze kinderen van spoorwegpersoneel. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door het bijzonder belang van de school voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur, voor het oeuvre van architect J.
