Inleiding.

Staafankers in drie gevels.

Introduction.

In the basin of Woudrichem on the northwestern Rijkswal, on the southern side thereof, lies a RESIDENTIAL HOUSE with elements of Eclecticism, built in 1889 as a doctor's residence by a KNIL physician repatriated from the Indies. The detached building stands with its northern facade on the Rijkswal, the southern facade on the Molenstraat, while the western transverse gable with the main entrance and overlying terrace faces the historic harbour. Initially the practice was on the ground floor and the residence on the upper floor, a functional division that can be read from the building. Later the ground floor became residential space by relocating the practice to a single-storey extension under a flat roof on the eastern transverse gable, with the entrance on the Rijkswal and the garage on the Molenstraat. The ground floor has a single-storey extension on the southwest side, a storage building, under a flat roof. Between both extensions lies the garden, which is separated from the Molenstraat by a wrought-iron fence. The house has remained a doctor's residence without interruption.

Description.

The two-storey volume with attic storey is built of stretcher-bonded brickwork under a gabled roof covered with black improved Dutch tiles between stepped gables with wind vanes. At the roof eave lies a gutter on wrought-iron brackets; on the roof two chimneys and centrally above the cornice of the southern facade a dormer under a flat roof with composite windows. Rod wall anchors in three facades. The ground floor is provided all around with white checkered render, finished by a moulded drip moulding, creating the impression of a plinth with overlying residence. The house has rendered corner pilasters with spandrel panels and entablature, connected in the Molenstraat facade by a frieze with circular ornament and richly moulded consoles under the moulded cornice. On the ground floor at the Rijkswal beneath the terrace lies the main entrance and in the north wall a side entrance, three oculi with iron casement windows, a large circular window with stained glass filling and the entrance to the practice. On the upper floor on all sides the same type of T-sash window with clear leaded glass light under a segmental arch in a moulded frame with diamond-head keystone and cartouche in rectangular field below the window. In both stepped gables an identically smaller format window, but without moulding. In the west gable are two entrance doors and the overlying window provided with panel shutters, as is the centrally located window in the north wall, where a horizontal light still lies in the masonry. The wall to the east has two, the wall to the south four windows. This south-facing facade on the Molenstraat with the frieze and the four tall windows is to be understood as the main facade. Analogous to the upper floor, the ground floor has four facade openings, including a door and three T-windows with clear lights under a segmental arch. Windows and doors in the extensions are of the same form.

Interiorly the building has retained its original structure with corridor and staircase on the north side and living, study and bedroom rooms on the south side. The rooms on the upper floor originally formed a suite of rooms each with a black/brown marble fireplace. The partition wall has been closed, the fireplaces are preserved. On the attic floor small rooms have been partitioned off so that the roof structure is not boarded.

Valuation.

The building is of general importance. It possesses cultural-historical value as a reminder of the social development of the village elite in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Furthermore as a representative example of the typological development of the residential house. It possesses architectural-historical value due to the aesthetic quality of the design and the detailing in particular. It has ensemble value through its striking location on the Rijkswal. The house has been preserved substantially intact in its main form and is as such rare.
