Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The VILLA "Leeuwenhof" is located in an extensive landscaped garden with old trees along the St.Michielsgestelseweg. This villa, formerly called "Villa Amélie", was built in 1900 after a design by architect J.G.Th. Aerden and exhibits Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance elements. The villa was built on the orders of opera singer Jozef Orelio (1854-1926).
Description
The partially vaulted villa has a roughly rectangular ground plan and comprises two storeys under a flat roof with hips, covered with slate. Iron ornamental railings on the roof. The building has an asymmetrical composition, with a tower on the south-western corner and a wooden conservatory along the eastern facade. The facades are built in brick with stone bands and natural stone ornamental elements. Along the upper edge of the facades the gutter rests on consoles, between which a frieze of decorative polychrome brickwork. The facades are provided with straight-topped windows with leaded fanlights. Above these relieving arches with decorative polychrome brickwork in the arch drums. The library on the ground floor originally had two narrow, coupled round-arched windows. However, this has been replaced later by simpler straight-topped windows.
The southern facade is composed of a broad projecting gable section with stepped gable. To the left of this a narrower, straight-topped gable section with above it a small roof dormer. Far left in this facade the octagonal corner tower. In the section with stepped gable a bay window is located on the right-hand side. Above it a balcony with wooden balustrade. To the left of this the entrance section with a trefoil arch, crowned by a pinnacle. The stepped gable has at the top a slightly projecting section, resting on a natural stone, basket-arched moulding. This gable termination is particularly richly decorated with three stepped gable crests, ornamental wall anchors, stones and iron paterae and date anchors.
In the recessed gable section the original windows have been replaced. In the breast wall a frieze with decorative brickwork. The corner tower has narrow vertical windows with leaded glass, at the top provided with round arches with decorative brickwork in the arch drums.
In the eastern facade the living room has a single-storey wooden conservatory, provided with a half-hipped roof with ornamental railing. Originally 'crenellations' were installed along the upper edge of the walls, but these were later removed. The windows of the dining room on the right in this facade are provided with wooden shutters.
The northern facade, like the southern facade, has a three-part composition. On the left a simple gable section, with at the level of the dining room two small Tudor-arched windows with wooden shutter. In the middle a risalit with an entrance section. To the right of this a single-storey extension under a ridge roof covered with slate with roof turret. To the right of the entrance, which is formed by a wooden panelled door with leaded fanlight and accessible via a low flight of steps, a foundation stone in natural stone with a frame with scrollwork. Text: 'The foundation stone was laid by Mrs. Jozef. M. T. Orelio, born R.M. Amélie 's Jongers, on the 10th of May 1900'. In the lower left corner of this stone 'J.G.T. Aerden, architect'.
In the interior the original layout has been preserved: a vestibule gives access to a central corridor, on the left side of which the front room and dining room open out and on the right side the kitchen and library. Furthermore, a large number of original elements are still present, such as among other things stucco ceilings in the hall, living and dining room, wooden heating encasements, wooden stair rails, door profiles and internal doors.
