Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The former brothers' monastery of the psychiatric institution "Huize Voorburg" was located on the eastern side of the main building, demolished in 1984. The brothers' monastery was -like the sisters' monastery- connected to this main building via a corridor. The monastery was built around 1930 after a design by the architect of the Bossche Godshuizen, J.J. van Dillen and exhibits elements of the late Amsterdam School. The passage between the southern and western wing of the building has been closed, in order to house two separate departments of the psychiatric hospital. Internally, various modifications have taken place over time: for instance, a number of rooms have been enlarged and the western wing has been provided with lowered ceilings. An extra storey has been added to the chapel.
Description
The monastery has a roughly L-shaped plan, with a chapel attached to the north side. The building comprises two storeys under an overhanging composite gabled roof with a boxed gutter, covered with improved Dutch tiles. On the west and east sides various single-storey outbuildings under gabled and hipped roofs. The walls are built in light sintered brick with concrete pilasters, cornices and decorative elements.
The southern wing of the main building shows a tripartite, stepped composition: on the left a projecting high section, containing the vestibule and the stairwell, directly to the right of this a lower two-storey section, in which rooms for the brothers were accommodated and far right a projecting single-storey extension under high gabled roof.
In the furthest left section -also under high gabled roof- lies the entrance area in the front facade behind a low brick wall, behind which a low staircase leads to the main entrance of the monastery. Double wooden door with two small square windows. To the left of the door a concrete letterbox in Amsterdam School design. Above the entrance a concrete cornice, above which three tall slitlights with leaded glass at the height of the stairwell. To the left of the entrance area four small square windows under the roof edge. In the western gable of the south wing on the ground floor a corner-placed window. On the upper storey far right five coupled slitlights. At the height of the attic two small square windows. In the lower facade section to the right of the entrance on the ground floor rectangular windows with small glazing bars. Fanlights with small horizontal hinged windows. On the upper storey the facade for the brothers' rooms is set slightly back and is preceded by loggias with balconies. In these loggias on the left a blocky concrete planter. The rooms on the upper storey have on the right a balcony door, to the left of this two small square windows. The single-storey extension far right has a series of closely spaced closed rectangular windows under the roof overhang. This high roof overlaps at the height of the ground floor partially -over the width of the furthest right bay- the two-storey middle section of the south wing.
In the eastern facade of the south wing an entrance area, consisting of a double wooden door with tall windows, side and fanlights, accessible via a low brick staircase.
The northern facade of the south wing on the ground floor broad four-part windows with small horizontal glazing bars in the outer windows. On the first storey square windows, in which windows with side and fanlights.
The west wing of the monastery has at the location of the brothers' rooms square windows, in which windows with side and fanlights. Perpendicular to the western facade three elongated single-storey extensions under gabled roofs. The middle of these three is slightly higher and wider than the other two extensions. In the furthest left extension is the entrance to the west wing in a portal with a rounded arch. Above this extension a series of small square windows. From the gable of the middle extension to approximately 6 metres to the right of the furthest right extension runs a brick wall: between the two extensions this creates an internal courtyard, accessible via a rounded arch gateway in the brick wall. The walls around the internal courtyard are articulated by brick pilasters, crowned by a cement spherical ornament. In the wall sections between these per three coupled tall slitlights.
In the eastern facade the window arrangement is identical to the northern facade of the south wing. Slightly to the left of centre a single-storey extension under overhanging flat roof for the recreation room. In this rectangular windows with two-part fanlight, in which on the left small horizontal hinged windows. Between these windows pilasters. Above the roof overhang a light well has been created, with alternating small square windows and wider rectangular windows with horizontal glazing bars.
On the northern side of the monastery complex a single-aisle chapel with high gabled roof. Roof windows have been added to this later. Above the choir a belfry tower under gabled roof. On either side of the choir single-storey side rooms under lean-to roofs. Above the roof of the chapel on the west side a bell turret with bell has been attached. The southern and northern facade of the chapel are articulated by buttresses, between which per three coupled closed slitlights. The side facades of the belfry tower are also provided with per three coupled tall slitlights with leaded glass.
The western wing of the former monastery has lowered ceilings, the internal walls are whitewashed and the arrangement of the rooms on the upper storey has been changed. In the former refectory, housed in the middle extension on the western side of the monastery, the internal articulation by means of lancet arch-shaped partition walls is still visible. The south wing has been altered less drastically. Of particular importance here is the stairwell with a large granite staircase, on the side clad with glazed tiles. Iron balustrade with a restrained Amsterdam School detailing.
Furthermore in both wings we still find the original tiled floors, walls in fair-faced brickwork (in the western wing recently whitewashed) and leaded glass windows in various rooms. The internal space of the chapel has been greatly altered by the placement of a lowered ceiling. Below this parts of the partition walls are still visible.
Evaluation
The brothers' monastery, belonging to the complex of the psychiatric institution "Huize Voorburg" is of general importance. The monastery possesses cultural-historical value as an expression of socio-economic and spiritual developments: it illustrates the flourishing of the institutional system in the second half of the nineteenth century. Furthermore the brothers' monastery is important as an illustration of a typological development: as part of the complex of "Huize Voorburg" it forms an illustrative example of the large psychiatric institutions that were established in the second half of the nineteenth century by Catholic institutions. At the same time the building is a good example of a medium-sized brothers' monastery. The object possesses architectural-historical value as an example of a monastery in a restrained Amsterdam School style and by the associated, distinctive ornamental work. Furthermore the monastery is important because of the place it occupies in the work of J.J. van Dillen, who as architect of the Bossche Godshuizen designed a large number of hospitals, institutional and monastery buildings in 's-Hertogenbosch and the surrounding area. The brothers' monastery possesses ensemble value as an essential part of a larger whole that is of national cultural-historical importance. Finally the brothers' monastery is important because of its functional and typological rarity.
