Inleiding
De WATERTOREN bevindt zich in het midden van het terrein van de psychiatrische inrichting "Huize Voorburg" en was oorspronkelijk direct achter het in 1984 afgebroken hoofdgebouw van de inrichting gelegen. De watertoren werd gebouwd in 1903, met als voornaamste doel de gebouwen van het psychiatrisch ziekenhuis in geval van brand van bluswater te voorzien. Het gebouw toont Neo-Romaanse stijlelementen. Het reservoir van de watertoren werd vervaardigd door de machinefabriek Grasso in 's-Hertogenbosch. De watertoren is niet meer in gebruik.
Omschrijving
De ca. 27 meter hoge watertoren is opgebouwd uit een octogonale schacht, opgetrokken in baksteen, met daarboven een octogonaal hoogreservoir met houten ommanteling. De schacht heeft een driedelige horizontale geleding: Aan de onderzijde een naar boven toe verjongende basis, waarin zich aan de voorzijde de ingang bevindt, bestaand uit een eenvoudige houten opgeklampte deur met een halfrond bovenlicht. Deze basis wordt aan de bovenzijde afgesloten door een fries met forse natuurstenen diamantkoppen. Boven dit fries wordt de schacht voortgezet in een hoog middengedeelte met kleine spleetvensters, aan de bovenzijde afgesloten door een rondboogfries. Hierboven een gedeelte met ronde vensters. De watertoren wordt bekroond door een overkragende kop met verticale beschieting. Hierin zijn aan de bovenzijde kleine ronde openingen aangebracht.
Het binnenwerk van de watertoren heeft een cilindervormig ijzeren reservoir met een inhoud van 5016 kubieke meter, dat zich op 22 meter hoogte bevindt.
Waardering
De watertoren, behorend bij de psychiatrische inrichting "Huize Voorburg" is van algemeen belang. De watertoren bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van sociaal-economische en geestelijke ontwikkelingen: als onderdeel van het psychiatrische inrichtingscomplex illustreert het de opbloei van het gestichtswezen in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw. The WATER TOWER is located in the middle of the grounds of the psychiatric institution "Huize Voorburg" and was originally located directly behind the main building of the institution, which was demolished in 1984.
