Inleiding

Introduction

Along the northern side of the Akkerstraat, the eastern side of the Fortstraat and the western side of the Hoogstraat, five blocks of RESIDENTIAL HOUSES of the same type are located. These housing blocks were constructed in 1938 in a Traditionalist style, designed by architect C. Knuttel. The residential houses were built on behalf of the married couple W. and Ch. E. van Beuningen, who wished to improve the living conditions of the Vught population through the construction of good housing.

Description

The residential houses have a rectangular floor plan and comprise one storey beneath an overhanging gabled roof with gutter bracket on corbels. The roofs have chimneys in unpainted brick and are covered with green glazed tiles. On the front and rear sides a flat-topped roof dormer. The walls of the residential houses are constructed in whitewashed brick, with a black-painted plinth.

In the front facade a simple entrance arrangement, formed by a wooden door with a narrow two-light window and a three-light fanlight. Beside it a cross window at the height of the front room, with two-light panes above and four-light panes below. Wooden under-shutters. Next to the entrance a one-light toilet window, which is linked to the toilet window of the adjacent residential house.

The gable end of Akkerstraat number 2 has an embedded terracotta head under a small canopy. At residential house Akkerstraat 2 a single-storey garage beneath a gabled roof, covered with green glazed tiles. The entrance to this garage is located on the Fortstraat and consists of a double, clamped round-arch door. Above it a small round window. The garage connects via a low wall, covered with glazed tiles, to the residential house. On the Fortstraat this wall is provided with a round-arch gate, which provides access to the back gardens of the housing block. The gable end of Akkerstraat 12 has to the right, at the height of the front room, a small cross window. The remaining gables are executed simply and without windows. In the rear facade these residential houses are provided with a simple kitchen door with six-light window and three-light side light. Beside it, at the height of the back room, a three-part composed window with two-light panes above and four-light panes below. The residential houses have in the back garden, behind the kitchen, a single-storey shed constructed in brick beneath a gabled roof.

In the majority of the residential houses the interior has changed over time. In contrast to the housing types described above (Complex Components 1 and 2), these residential houses originally had a fixed wall instead of sliding doors between the front and back room on the ground floor. In addition a narrow corridor with concrete-enamel wainscoting and granito floor. On the upper storey these houses originally had four bedrooms.

Valuation

The residential houses belonging to the public housing complex "Piekenhoek" are of general importance. The residential houses have cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic development; they form an example of public housing realised by private benefactors. The residential houses have architectural-historical value as an example of public housing in a characteristically detailed, traditionalist formal language and on account of the particular use of materials. The residential houses possess ensemble value as an essential component of a larger whole that is of national importance from a cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning perspective. Finally, the residential houses are of importance on account of the integrity of the exterior and on account of typological rarity.
