Inleiding

Introduction

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. Park layout on a rectangular plot laid out from the first half of the 17th century (before 1636) as such still well-preserved, demarcated by boundary ditches from other plots of the 's-Graveland polder and from the public road (Zuidereinde). The southern plot ditch was laid out after 1767, when Schoonoord was separated from Rontomwelgevallen.

The layout is surrounded on three sides (south, west and north side) by beech avenues (19th century). On the front (west) side of the country estate, between the boundary ditch and the public road a row of oaks from the early 19th century or older and in front of it the remnant of a row of beeches (19th century). The park layout of Schoonoord is within the aforementioned framework of beech avenues divided from west to east into three compartments; (1) the 'homestead', an open space with utility gardens, lawn and borders around the current house Schoonoord (originally laid out in the first decades of the 20th century by Louis Copijn) with in front of this house a row of limes from the 18th century, which marked the farmstead of the original farm from the second half of the 18th century. To the west and south of this space a park wood with remnants of winding paths from the end of the 18th century; (2) a rectangular area with a large winding wood with pond in landscape style with islet, currently planted with beeches from the second half of the 19th century. This winding wood is a very well-preserved example of an early landscape layout from the end of the 18th century; (3) a park wood with remnants of layout in landscape style from the end of the 18th century, of which the pattern of layout is no longer discernible everywhere due to overgrowth. In the SE corner a hillock, on which originally a gazebo was situated (indicated on the Cadastral Minute Plan of 1828 and last mentioned in 1856). The layout also includes the access avenue (beech) on the rear side, which leads over the Trompenveld to the rear of the park of Schoonoord and which is already mentioned in a deed from 1767, when the country estate Rontomwelgevallen to the south obtains right of way. Possibly after 1785, when the owner of Schoonoord, Joan Hodshon, acquires the eastern part of Schoonoord again, this avenue was laid out as an access avenue to the original house Schoonoord situated on the other side of the Zuidereinde.

The aforementioned landscape layout was probably laid out by Joan Hodshon, who in 1774 acquires the western part and in 1785 the eastern part of Schoonoord. The division between these two parts, which was presumably laid out in 1767, when Schoonoord is separated from Rontomwelgevallen (Groenlust), as a passage for cattle between the fields of Rontomwelgevallen and Spiegelrust, is still clearly discernible now.

Valuation

The historic park layout of the country estate Schoonoord is of general interest due to the cultural and garden-historical value of the formal avenue pattern, which originally dates from the 18th century; the demarcation plan of the country estate with framing of boundary ditches and timber banks, which as such forms a well-preserved plot (plot 18) of the pattern of 27 's-Graveland polder plots laid out in the 1630s; and the winding wood with pond and islet which is a well-preserved example of a late 18th-century layout in early landscape style.
