Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
TRAFFIC BRIDGE of the swing bridge type, placed in 1881 over the lock of the great dock (national monument number 021423) altered in 1802 in the fortress Hellevoetsluis. The bridge was built by the 'IJzergieterij De Prins van Oranje' at 's-Gravenhage.
Description
The traffic bridge is a symmetrical double swing bridge, positioned east-west on the lock which separates the great dock from the open water of the Haringvliet. The quarter-turn rotating sections pivot on circular pivot points on the bridge abutments. The sections swing towards the north, in the direction of the dock. In the middle the bridge sections fit precisely together.
The bridge is mainly made of riveted cast-iron parts. The roadway consists of wooden plank sections, which are covered with bitumen.
The greatest weight of the bridge sections is located beside and above the pivot points on the quays, as a counterweight to the tapering overhanging beams above the water. Each bridge section consists of two of these riveted bridge beams. Perpendicular to these beams are cast-iron consoles riveted which support the foundation of the roadway.
Each bridge section is provided on both sides with a fourteen-part railing with wooden handrail. Each bay of this railing is decorated with three spikes between which a curled motif is forged and riveted.
Valuation
The swing bridge is of general importance because of its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and ensemble value.
- The bridge has cultural-historical value as a special component of the historically important naval harbour.
- The bridge has architectural-historical value as a good example of a nineteenth-century swing bridge composed of wrought and cast-iron parts.
- The bridge has ensemble value because of the spatial-functional and visual relationship with the lock and the great dock.
- The bridge is furthermore of importance because of its recognisability and the reasonable degree of intactness.
