Inleiding

Introduction

DOCTOR'S RESIDENCE with associated BOUNDARY WALL in the style of the Nieuwe Bouwen, built in 1933 to the design of architect M. Cijffers for doctor H. Poot. In the facade along the Dorpsstraat there is a staircase window with a stained-glass window depicting the Good Samaritan, designed by Mathieu Wiegman. The doctor's residence is located at the corner of the Dorpsstraat and the Sint Anthonisstraat.

Description

The whitewashed doctor's residence comprises one to three storeys and has a composite building volume of three interlocking cube-shaped building elements on an L-shaped plan. The facade on the Dorpsstraat is relatively closed; on the garden side the house opens up with large glass surfaces, terraces and balconies. The parapet of the terrace on the second floor and the flat roof of the third storey are covered with black glazed roof tiles. Largely steel windows and doors in composite frames under projecting concrete lintels, partly executed with pivot windows and fanlight windows in the fanlights.

In the centre of the front facade (N) on the Dorpsstraat a flat-roofed cantilevered entrance in the corner of two facade elements offset in relation to each other. The entrance contains a steel glazed door of four panes and in the side facade, perpendicular to the front facade, the door. In the left facade panel a three-part window on the ground floor and above it on the corner the flagpole holder and to the right the high vertical staircase window with coloured stained glass. To the right of the entrance a three-part window on the ground floor and on the floor above two smaller horizontal windows. In the right side facade (W) on the left a floor window with opening sashes and on the right a small flat-roofed extension with the entrance to the practice room, closed off on the rear side by the high rising extension of the chimney section. In the facade of the practice room a three-part window.

The rear facade (S) is determined by a projecting second storey with balcony with plastered parapet. The terrace on the ground floor is covered with red tiles and runs around the corner to the east facade. On the corner a semicircular masonry steps of three treads provide access to the garden. On the ground floor on the left a steel glazed door with sidelights in composite frame and on the right two large four-part frames with windows and doors to the terrace. The right frame is set back under the balcony of the first floor which ends semicircularly on the corner and runs the full width of the facade. Here three four-part frames with doors to the balcony come forward and a window with opening sashes. On the left corner the chimney and in the right side facade a window. The flat roof above this building volume forms the balcony ("sunbathing area") of the second storey. In the higher rising recessed building volume on the right a composite frame with door on the first floor and on the second floor on the right a three-part window and on the left a door with sidelights that opens to the sunbathing area. In the right side facade (E) on the ground floor a large three-part frame with glass doors that open to the terrace and to the left of it under the semicircular overhang of the balcony a two-pane window. On the floor above a four-part window. Along the facade an external staircase runs, the treads of which are covered with red tiles, leading to the balcony on the first floor and from there a second smaller staircase leads to the balcony on the second floor. On the parapets of the staircases steel tube railings. In the side and rear facades of the single-storey extension (practice room) on the rear side various windows with steel frames of different sizes.

Along the Dorpsstraat there is a plastered boundary wall which rises stepwise towards the corner with the St. Anthonisstraat and ends in a circular form on the corner.

Valuation

The doctor's residence and associated boundary wall dating from 1933 is of general importance due to its architectural and cultural-historical value as a representative and largely intact example of the Nieuwe Bouwen with the characteristic strict proportioning, interplay between horizontal and vertical elements, whitewashed facades and steel frames. The stained-glass window by artist Mathieu Wiegman has artistic-historical value. The building is a landmark in the village centre of Bergen.
