Inleiding
CAFE-RESTAURANT "Duinvermaak" dateert in oorsprong uit de negentiende eeuw, maar heeft in 1913 het huidige aanzien in Nieuw-Historiserende trant gekregen naar ontwerp van J.C. Leyen in opdracht van C. Bruin. Het lage gedeelte achter het hoofdvolume dateert van voor 1913. Gevelsteen: Eerste steen gelegd door Klaas Bruin op 24 dec. 1913, oud 17 jaren. De architect ontwierp eveneens het interieur met de bar. Het glas-in-lood in de bovenlichten is vervaardigd door de glazenier Willem Bogtman. Het pand ligt aan de noordkant van Bergen tegen de duinrand aan.
Omschrijving
Pand op L-vormige plattegrond met hoofdvolume van twee bouwlagen in rode baksteen onder een mansardekap met gesmoorde tuile du Nord en een overkragende gootlijst op klossen. Aan de achterzijde een korte éénlaagse vleugel onder schild-zadeldak met gesmoorde Hollandse pannen.
De symmetrisch ingedeelde voorgevel (W) van het hoofdvolume telt vijf vensterassen en wordt geleed door gemetselde pilasters met ter hoogte van het fries smalle gepleisterde fantasiekapitelen, voorzien van reliëfornamenten. Beganegronds grote vensters met in de getoogde bovenlichten gekleurde glas-in-loodramen met dierfiguren. Uiterst links de entreepartij met dubbele glasdeur tussen zijlichten onder luifel op gesneden consoles. Op de verdieping kruisvensters met openslaande ramen en in de bovenlichten een vertikale roede. In de middenas van de gevel een gemetselde dakkapel met venster als op de verdieping onder een iets overstekende steekkap. Ter weerszijden in het dakschild een klein getoogd vierruits dakvensters. De rechter zijgevel (Z) is net als de voorgevel geleed met pilasters en telt drie vensterassen. Beganegronds drie hoge dubbele glasdeuren onder getoogde tweeruits bovenlichten en op de verdieping temidden van twee vensters met kruiskozijn twee enkelvoudige vensters alle met openslaande ramen. In het midden van het dakschild een dakkapel onder lessenaardak.
In de linker zijgevel (N) op de begane grond rechts een dubbele deur onder bovenlicht (1932) en links daarvan drie kleine vensters met tweeruits bovenlichten. Twee verdiepingsvensters als in de voorgevel en in het midden van het dakschild een dakkapel onder lessenaardakje.
Voor de achtergevel (O) rechts een lage keukenaanbouw en links het oudste gedeelte, op de verdieping vijf vensters met bovenlicht.
Inwendig is onder meer de tegellambrizering in de vestibule en de grote zaal met bar en tapkast bewaard gebleven.
Waardering
Het grotendeels uit 1913 daterende café-restaurant "Duinvermaak" is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde als representatief en grotendeels gaaf typologisch voorbeeld van een horecagelegenheid in Nieuw-Historiserende trant en als voorbeeld van een maatschappelijke ontwikkeling van het opkomende toerisme in Bergen vanaf omstreeks 1900.

CAFE-RESTAURANT "Duinvermaak" dates in origin from the nineteenth century, but received its current appearance in 1913 in the New Historicist style after a design by J.C. Leyen on behalf of C. Bruin. The low section behind the main volume dates from before 1913. Foundation stone: First stone laid by Klaas Bruin on 24 December 1913, aged 17 years. The architect also designed the interior with the bar. The leaded glass in the fanlights was made by the glazier Willem Bogtman. The building is located on the north side of Bergen against the dune ridge.
Description
Building on an L-shaped floor plan with main volume of two storeys in red brick under a mansard roof with suppressed Marseille tiles and an overhanging cornice on corbels. At the rear a short single-storey wing under a hipped-gabled roof with suppressed Dutch tiles.
The symmetrically arranged front facade (W) of the main volume has five window bays and is articulated by brick pilasters with at the level of the frieze narrow rendered fantasy capitals, provided with relief ornaments. At ground level large windows with coloured leaded glass panes with animal figures in the curved fanlights. At the far left the entrance section with a double glass door between side lights under a canopy on cut brackets. On the first floor cross windows with opening sashes and in the fanlights a vertical glazing bar. In the central axis of the facade a brick dormer with a window as on the first floor under a slightly projecting steep roof. On either side in the roof a small curved four-pane roof window. The right side facade (S) is, like the front facade, articulated with pilasters and has three window bays. At ground level three tall double glass doors under curved two-pane fanlights and on the first floor between two windows with cross sashes two single windows all with opening sashes. In the centre of the roof a dormer under a lean-to roof.
In the left side facade (N) at ground level on the right a double door under fanlight (1932) and to the left of it three small windows with two-pane fanlights. Two first-floor windows as on the front facade and in the centre of the roof a dormer under a small lean-to roof.
In front of the back facade (E) on the right a low kitchen extension and on the left the oldest section, on the first floor five windows with fanlights.
Internally preserved are among others the tile wainscotting in the vestibule and the large room with bar and counter.
Valuation
The cafe-restaurant "Duinvermaak", largely dating from 1913, is of general importance for its architectural and cultural-historical value as a representative and largely intact typological example of a hospitality establishment in the New Historicist style and as an example of a social development of the emerging tourism in Bergen from approximately 1900 onwards.
