Inleiding
Uit 1926 daterend GRAFMONUMENT van W. Sonneveld (1863-1926), grootmeester van de Orde der Vrijmetselaren onder het Grootoosten der Nederlanden en vice-president van de Raad van Indië. Het grafmonument werd ontworpen door Simon Franco (1872-1931), eveneens lid van de vrijmetselaarsorde.
Omschrijving
Circa 2,50 m hoog blokvormig grafmonument van grijs kalksteen bestaande uit een rechthoekige sokkel (ca. 1,30 breed en 0,70 m diep) waarop drie uit de achterwand loskomende zuilen met bloemkapiteel die een dekplaat dragen met daarop een rechthoekig volume. De voorzijde van de laatste toont in reliëf de vrijmetselaarssymbolen passer en alziend oog geflankeerd door twee sphinxen. Boven elke zuil is in de dekplaat een letter gehouwen: van links naar rechts een "W", een "K" en een "S". Deze (vergulde) letters staan voor Wijsheid, Kracht en Schoonheid, de drie pijlers waarop de vrijmetselarij gestoeld is. Dit thema wordt in het grafmonument gevisualiseerd. Middenvoor vermeldt de sokkel "Mr. WILLEM/ SONNEVELD/ GEB./ 21 MAART 1863/ SCHIEDAM/ ---/ OVERL./ 24 MAART 1926/ 's-GRAVENHAGE" en lager "DOOR DE ORDE VAN VRIJMETSELAREN/ OPGERICHT TER EERE VAN/ DE NAGEDACHTENIS VAN HAREN/ GROOTMEESTER". GRAVE MONUMENT dating from 1926 of W. Sonneveld (1863-1926), Grand Master of the Order of Freemasons under the Grand East of the Netherlands and vice-president of the Council of the Indies. The grave monument was designed by Simon Franco (1872-1931), likewise a member of the freemasons order.
Description
Approximately 2.50 m high block-shaped grave monument of grey limestone consisting of a rectangular base (approximately 1.30 m wide and 0.70 m deep) on which three columns with floral capitals project from the rear wall and carry a slab on which rests a rectangular volume. The front of the latter displays in relief the freemasons symbols compass and all-seeing eye flanked by two sphinxes. Above each column a letter is carved into the slab: from left to right a "W", a "K" and an "S". These (gilded) letters stand for Wisdom, Strength and Beauty, the three pillars on which freemasonry is founded. This theme is visualized in the grave monument. In the centre front the base reads "Mr. WILLEM/ SONNEVELD/ BORN/ 21 MARCH 1863/ SCHIEDAM/ ---/ DIED/ 24 MARCH 1926/ 's-GRAVENHAGE" and lower "ERECTED BY THE ORDER OF FREEMASONS/ IN HONOUR OF/ THE MEMORY OF THEIR/ GRAND MASTER".
