Inleiding
GRAFMONUMENT van prof.dr. A.G. van Hamel (1842-1907), Waals predikant en later Nederlands eerste hoogleraar in de Franse taal- en letterkunde. De uit 1907 of 1908 daterende grafsteen werd vervaardigd door de Amsterdamse beeldhouwer Joseph Mendes da Costa (1863-1939).
Omschrijving
Staande grafsteen van zandsteen met een hoogte van circa 2,20 m, een dikte van 20 cm en een breedte van 1,30 m. De smallere (0,90 m) en in een flauwe punt eindigende bovenste helft van de grafsteen toont in reliëf het echtpaar hand in hand en ten voeten uit: links Van Hamel met de ogen gesloten en in zijn rechter hand een boek, rechts zijn veel jongere echtgenote Marie van Stockum (1869-1953) met in haar linker hand een roos en de mond geopend als teken van rouw. Het verstrakt weergegeven echtpaar wordt geflankeerd door gestileerde klimop die zich boven hun hoofd verstrengeld en door twee eveneens gestileerde eikenbomen waarvan de toppen elkaar raken. Zowel de klimop als de eik zijn symbolen voor eeuwige vriendschap en kracht. Onder het reliëf is het volgende gedicht gehouwen: "AAN UW RIJKEN SCHAT VAN KENNIS/ PAARDET GIJ REINE LEVENSVREUGD/ TOT STEUN MIJ WIJZEND IN DROEVE UREN/ WAT VREUGD EN SCHOONHEID OM ONS IS". De overgang tussen het onderste gedeelte en de smallere bovenste helft van de grafsteen wordt aan weerszijden gemarkeerd door een uiltje als symbool van de wijsheid.

Description
Standing gravestone of sandstone with a height of approximately 2.20 m, a thickness of 20 cm and a width of 1.30 m. The narrower (0.90 m) upper half of the gravestone, ending in a shallow point, shows in relief the married couple hand in hand shown full length: on the left Van Hamel with eyes closed and in his right hand a book, on the right his much younger wife Marie van Stockum (1869-1953) with in her left hand a rose and mouth open as a sign of mourning. The stiffly rendered married couple is flanked by stylised ivy which entwines above their heads and by two likewise stylised oak trees whose tops touch each other. Both the ivy and the oak are symbols of eternal friendship and strength. Below the relief is carved the following poem: "TO YOUR RICH TREASURE OF KNOWLEDGE/ YOU PAIRED PURE JOY OF LIFE/ A SUPPORT TO ME POINTING IN SORROWFUL HOURS/ WHAT JOY AND BEAUTY AROUND US IS". The transition between the lower section and the narrower upper half of the gravestone is marked on either side by a small owl as a symbol of wisdom.

The grave monument is of general importance for its cultural-historical value as a characteristic and well-preserved early 20th-century grave monument on the Westerveld cemetery; for its funeral-historical and genealogical value; for its distinctive design.
