Inleiding

Dudok.

Introduction

Former RECEPTION BUILDING from 1937-1941, part of the Velsen crematorium complex. The reception building was constructed on behalf of the Facultative Association for Cremation according to a design by architect W.M. Dudok in a design style related to the 'International Style'. The building is separated from the Driehuizerkerkweg by a spacious forecourt with driveway and green planting.

Description

The former reception building is composed of three nearly rectangular building volumes of varying height. This three-part arrangement stems from the multiple functions the building originally had: an administrative section in the tall central part, a director's residence in the right wing connecting at right angles to the central part, and a garage together with reception area in the left wing which forms a blunt angle with the central part. The garage-reception section contains only a ground floor, the director's residence and the somewhat higher administrative section both have two storeys. The lower wings flank the forecourt and give the building an inviting character: the visitor is as it were received with open arms and led towards the entrance on the left in the central part. All three building volumes have a gently sloping lean-to roof with a broad overhang at the front. The external walls are constructed in whitewashed brick (in half-brick bond) above a grey-painted plinth. The windows, mostly recessed in the facade, are executed in steel and fitted with black drip mouldings.

The front facade (E) of the garage-reception wing has on the left a wall surface which, except for a narrow window at the far left, is closed. To the right of this closed wall surface (behind which is the garage) the facade recedes up to the administrative section. In front of this recessed facade surface (behind which is the former reception hall), which is fitted with a large elongated window unit and a door to its left, stand seven steel columns which support the non-recessed lean-to roof. In the left side facade (S) of the administrative section, which projects above the garage-reception wing, there is a round window. The left part of the administrative section extends forward and has at the front a glazed entrance portico with cantilevered roof and above it a curtain wall extending to the roof which illuminates the hall behind. To the right of the curve the ground floor has a series of fourteen windows and the first floor two large multi-pane windows separated by a narrow wall section which are set in the facade surface. The transition between the administrative section and the director's residence is clearly readable on the first floor through the insertion of a recessed intermediate volume which is lower than both the administrative section and the director's residence and fitted with four-pane horizontal windows and a balcony with iron railing. In the adjoining south-west facade of the director's residence there are on both storeys two composite horizontal windows. The ground floor also has a third window on the right and on the left a flat door with side and fanlight. Below the ground floor windows there is a masonry planter which continues along the short north-west facade. The latter facade is on the ground floor fitted with a horizontal window and above it is blind. In the projecting right part of the facade there is on the ground floor a small cantilevered window and on the first floor a three-pane horizontal window. The north-east facade of the director's residence has on the first floor eight narrow windows. On the ground floor there is on the left and right a horizontal composite window and to the left of the right window a narrow window and a flat rear door under a concrete canopy. The door has a round window and is flanked on the left side by a narrow side light. The recessed north-east corner has in the north-west facade of the director's residence on the left a flat door with side and fanlight, on the right a window and on the first floor a composite horizontal window. In the adjoining right side facade (NE) of the administrative section there are on the first floor three windows. Against this facade there adjoins on the right a low rectangular storage room with a gently sloping lean-to roof, with four narrow windows in the north-west facade and a door in the south-east facade. The rear facade (NW) of the administrative section is on both storeys fitted with a series of thirteen windows with a common drip moulding and, to the right of this, two single windows. The curved right facade section has on both storeys a series of four windows and on the left a ground floor extension under a gently sloping gabled roof. The extension is fitted with four narrow windows: three in the north-west facade and one in the south-west facade. In the latter facade there is on the right a portico. On the west side there is a pronounced bend in the building which corresponds with the curvature on the south-east facade. The former reception hall is blind at the rear. After the reception hall the facade recesses and the "garage section" begins, in which on the left there is a recess with a flat door above which is glass, in the middle a round-arch door and at the top four narrow fanlights. In the short south facade of the garage-reception wing there is on the left a narrow window which extends to the roof and on the right a three-part wooden garage door with a round window at the top of each of the three doors.

The austere INTERIOR is still largely in the original state and is provided among other things with flat flush doors, plastered walls and ceilings, a tall hall with a staircase following the curved rear wall fitted with wooden treads and risers and a steel railing, austere tile floors and tile wainscoting in the toilet areas, in the large former management room at the front on the first floor a basket-arch vault in cross-section and a fireplace set back in the wall of yellow brick surrounded by a semicircular sun motif of red hand-formed brick, and in the former director's residence among other things a room with a similar fireplace and a spacious living room in which a quarter-round staircase with a closed breastwork alongside fitted with a wooden top rail and railing.

Valuation

The former reception building with its associated interior and surrounding green planting is of general importance as a historical-functional component of the Velsen crematorium complex, as a largely well-preserved reception building from the second quarter of the twentieth century and by virtue of its architectural design in International Style. The property is also important as a characteristic work from the oeuvre of architect W.M. Dudok.
