Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Omschrijving.
Geheel vrijstaande, noord-zuid gerichte kruiskerk.

Description
Introduction.
Sint-Servatius, CHURCH, erected between 1877 and 1879 to the design of architect J. Werten in Neo-Gothic style. The tower pinnacles date from 1889. The building is a brick cruciform church, beautifully situated in the elongated brook valley settlement on the south side of Sint-Servatiusstraat, the through road connecting Heeswijk with Dinther. On the east and south sides of the church is a graveyard.
Description.
Completely detached, north-south oriented cruciform church. The church is a brick structure with some use of natural stone in cappings, mouldings, traceries and pinnacles. The nave has four bays, the transept one and the choir two. The choir furthermore has a three-sided blind closure.
The tower has four storeys and angled buttresses. The wall surfaces are largely unadorned, giving the tower a massive appearance. The first storey has a projecting portal, flanked by pointed arch recesses with images of Servatius and Willibrordus. The second storey has two brick recesses in a field bounded by a brick dentil band and above the entrance a tripartite pointed arch window. The third storey has three recesses set in a spandrel field. The bell storey has divided louvers above which the clockwork and a pointed arch niche, set in a triangular spandrel field that continues into crockets. These are crowned with a pinnacle and encompass the eight-sided, slightly constricted below the cross and thereby very striking, spire. The nave has a short bay followed by three bays with bipartite pointed arch windows, which, as elsewhere in the church, have late-gothic formed traceries. The end gables of the transepts have two elongated pointed arch windows with tripartite sashes above which a rose window and in the apex gable three lancet windows. The buttresses here have pinnacles, the apex gables have a cross. The choir has a blind closure and tripartite windows in the bays and is flanked by side spaces with bipartite pointed arch windows. Internally too the building displays restrained forms appearing late-gothic, whereby the curious bays with flamboyant tracework above the profiled cluster piers and transverse arches appear to be derived from Brabantine late-gothic. High above these fields are the clerestory windows. The entire church is vaulted with cross-ribbed vaults. In the choir closure are flamboyant traceries in the blind recesses. The church has recent simple colouring for accentuating lines and surfaces. In the church are six sculptures and plaster Stations of the Cross by F. de Vriendt (19th century) and a sculpture of Cecilia. Furthermore eighteen non-figurative windows by Marius de Leeuw (1956 and 1959) and four windows with the Annunciation, Nativity, Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and Ascension. Of the pulpit (1881) three reliefs remain with the handing over of the staff to Peter, the Sermon on the Mount and the 12-year-old Jesus in the Temple. Delicately worked balustrade of the choir loft.
Appreciation.
The church is of general importance because of the cultural-historical values it possesses as a particular expression of spiritual development and as an illustrative example of the wave of neo-churches from the period after 1853. The church has architectural-historical importance because of its place in the oeuvre of architect J. Werten who drew inspiration from works of his contemporary, the Brabantine church builder C. van Dijk, and also applied motifs borrowed from late Brabantine gothic. Furthermore the church has architectural-historical importance because of the high-quality nature of the constituent components and the particular coherence between exterior and interior. The church has ensemble value because of the historical-spatial relationship with the surrounding churchyard and the through road on which it is situated. The church has been well preserved.
