The register's description

Inleiding

HERENHUIS in een gesloten straatwand aan de westzijde van de Kapellerlaan. Het pand werd in 1898 gebouwd in opdracht van de kunstenaar A. Windhausen, een Roermondse schilder van kerkelijke kunst werkzaam in de kunstwerkplaatsen van Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. De toegepaste bouwstijl is traditionalistisch met elementen Neo-Renaissance.

Omschrijving

Herenhuis in twee bouwlagen plus dakverdieping. Zadeldak met Tuiles du Nord-pannen. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen met metselwerk in kruisverband, en hardsteen. Baksteen in donkere- en lichtrode tint. Voorgevel met gepleisterde speklagen. Rechthoekige houten vensters met bovenlicht in een rondboogvormige metselwerk omlijsting. Deur- en vensteromlijstingen met hardstenen aanzetstenen en sluitsteen.

Hardstenen dorpelstenen. Vulstukken met decoratief metselwerk.

Bovenlichten met gekleurd glas.

Asymmetrische indeling VOORGEVEL. Plint bekleedt met hardsteen.

In de eerste bouwlaag aan de linkerzijde de entree met dubbele houten paneeldeur en drie hardstenen toegangstreden. Bovenlicht voordeur met glas in lood.

Middendeel voorgevel met vijfzijdige erker met plat dak met hierop een balkon met smeedijzeren balkonhek. Houten erker op een bakstenen basement. Rechthoekige houten erkervensters. In het balkonhek op de erker het monogram AW. In de plint van erker kleine keldervensters.

In het rechterdeel voorgevel in de eerste bouwlaag een rechthoekig venster in een rondboogvormige metselwerk omlijsting.

In het middendeel van de tweede bouwlaag dubbele balkondeuren met aan weerszijden een rechthoekig houten venster.

Aan de bovenzijde van de vensters in de tweede bouwlaag een horizontale reeks hardstenen diamantkoppen.

Voorgevel uitlopend in een trapgevel met hierin een rechthoekig houten venster in rondboogvormige metselwerkomlijsting met aan weerszijden een hardstenen gevelsteen met resp. de tekst ANNO 1898. Aan de bovenzijde van het venster een ronde blinde nis.

Smeedijzeren trapgevelbekroning. Trapgevel met zadeldak met pannen.

Blinde LINKERZIJGEVEL.

Asymmetrische indeling ACHTERGEVEL. Aan linkerdeel achtergevel in de eerste bouwlaag een forse aangebouwde erker in baksteen.

In de achtergevel van de erker rechthoekige houten vensters met glas-in-lood bovenlichten. Gecementeerde dorpelstenen. Erker met plat dak met hierop een balkon. In het basement van de erker segmentboogvormige souterrainvensters.

Aan de rechterzijgevel van de erker een aanbouwtje in een bouwlaag met plat dak met toegangsdeur. Toegangsdeur tot de gang van omstreeks 1980 met hardstenen trapje met metalen leuning. In de tweede bouwlaag achtergevel een tweetal segmentboogvormige houten vensters waarvan een met bovenlicht. In de tweede bouwlaag tevens hoge balkondeuren met bovenlichten. Dakkapel van omstreeks 1980. Aan de rechterzijgevel aanbouw in twee bouwlagen met plat dak. Deze aanbouw is uitgesloten van bescherming.

Structuur van het INTERIEUR in tact. Van het interieur is onder meer het volgende van belang. Gang met voorhalletje met vloer met witte marmer en zwarte natuursteen tegels. Vervolgens trapje met vier natuursteen treden naar grote gang en trappenhuis.

Grote gang met zelfde tegelvloer als voorhalletje. Ter hoogte van het trapje gestucte boog met consoles en pilasters. Plafond met stucwerk rozet. Authentieke houten trap met hoofdbaluster en ronde spijlen. In de eerste kamer rechts haardlijst in zwarte marmer met aan de voorzijde twee marmer pilaartjes; gestuct rozet met bloemmotieven; plafond met gestucte koof.

Waardering

Het herenhuis is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling in de herenhuisarchitectuur van het laatste kwart van de 19de eeuw.

Het herenhuis bezit architectuurhistorische waarde wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. Ensemblewaarde ontleent het pand aan de situering aan de Kapellerlaan. De Kapellerlaan is met haar villa- en herenhuisbebouwing als geheel van belang voor de ontwikkeling en het aanzien van Roermond.

Het herenhuis is van algemeen belang wegens de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur m.n. de voorgevel en een deel van het interieur, en de redelijke mate van architectuurhistorische en typologische zeldzaamheid.

Central section front facade with five-sided bay with flat roof with thereupon a balcony with wrought-iron balcony railing. Wooden bay on a brick basement. Rectangular wooden bay windows. In the balcony railing on the bay the monogram AW. In the plinth of the bay small cellar windows.

On the right section front facade on the first storey a rectangular window in a round-arch-shaped masonry surround.

In the central section of the second storey double balcony doors with on either side a rectangular wooden window.

At the top of the windows on the second storey a horizontal series of hardstone diamond-shaped stones.

Front facade terminating in a stepped gable with therein a rectangular wooden window in round-arch-shaped masonry surround with on either side a hardstone facade stone with respectively the text ANNO 1898. At the top of the window a round blind niche.

Wrought-iron stepped gable crest. Stepped gable with gabled roof with tiles.

Blind LEFT SIDE FACADE.

Asymmetrical layout REAR FACADE. On left section rear facade on the first storey a substantial attached bay in brick.

In the rear facade of the bay rectangular wooden windows with leaded glass fanlights. Cemented threshold stones. Bay with flat roof with thereupon a balcony. In the basement of the bay segmental-arch-shaped basement windows.

On the right side facade of the bay a small attached structure in one storey with flat roof with entrance door. Entrance door to the corridor of circa 1980 with hardstone step with metal railing. In the second storey rear facade a pair of segmental-arch-shaped wooden windows, one of which with fanlight. In the second storey also tall balcony doors with fanlights. Roof dormer of circa 1980. On the right side facade attached structure in two storeys with flat roof. This attached structure is excluded from protection.

Structure of the INTERIOR intact. Of the interior the following is notably important amongst other things. Corridor with entrance hall with floor of white marble and black natural stone tiles. Subsequently a step with four natural stone treads towards large corridor and stairwell.

Large corridor with same tile floor as entrance hall. At the height of the step a stuccoed arch with consoles and pilasters. Ceiling with stucco rosette. Authentic wooden staircase with main baluster and round balusters. In the first room to the right a fireplace surround in black marble with on the front two marble small columns; stuccoed rosette with floral motifs; ceiling with stuccoed cove.

Valuation

The mansion is of cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a typological development in mansion architecture of the last quarter of the 19th century.

The mansion possesses architectural-historical value due to the aesthetic qualities of the design, the particular use of materials and the ornamentation. It derives ensemble value from the location on the Kapellerlaan. The Kapellerlaan is with its villa and mansion development as a whole of importance for the development and appearance of Roermond.

The mansion is of general importance due to the architectural integrity of the exterior particularly the front facade and part of the interior, and the reasonable degree of architectural-historical and typological rarity.
