Inleiding
WERKPLAATS of atelier gebouwd in opdracht van de Roermondse kunstschilder A. Windhausen, schilder voor kerkelijke kunst en werkzaam in de kunstwerkplaatsen van Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. Het pand is gebouwd XXa in de stijl van het Traditionalisme en is gelegen achter het voormalig woonhuis van deze kunstenaar aan het pad langs de Roer van de Kapellerlaan naar de Andersonweg. In 1996 is het pand gerestaureerd.
Omschrijving
De WERKPLAATS heeft oorspronkelijk een hoofdzakelijk rechthoekige plattegrond in één bouwlaag met trapgevels, onder een zadeldak met wolfeind en muldenpannen. Op het dak bevinden zich twee niet originele dakramen en een koperen nokpion met naald. De gevels hebben een gecementeerde plint en een opstand van baksteen in kruisverband. In de gevel bevinden zich rechthoekige en rondboogvormige vensterkozijnen, sommige zijn voorzien van biljoen of met gekleurd glas-in-lood. Verder bevinden zich tegen alle gevelvlakken meerdere soorten decoratieve ankers. De trapgevels beginnen met een uitkraging als aanzet en zijn bekleed met een deksteen.
In de RECHTERZIJGEVEL bevindt zich in de eerste bouwlaag een niet origineel aluminium kozijn in verdiepte rondboog nis. In de tweede laag bevindt zich een rondboognis tussen twee rondboogvormige glas-in-loodramen. Hierboven bevindt zich een ronde nis tussen twee ankers. Op de hoek van deze gevel en de voorgevel staat een trapgewijs oplopend muurtje als POORT met rondboogvormige doorgang en rondboogvormig hekwerk. Verder met afdekstenen en een muuranker, de bovenste drie treden zijn smaller.
De VOORGEVEL heeft rechts van het midden een uitspringend volume ter plaatse van het trappenhuis. Rechts van dit volume bevindt zich in de eerste laag een klein venster met gewapend glas en in de tweede laag een anker.
De RECHTERZIJGEVEL VAN DIT VOLUME heeft een rondboogvormige deur met klein rechthoekig venster met figuurglas en een trekbel.
Boven de deur is een niet origineel mozaiek geplaatst en in de tweede laag bevindt zich een rondboognis.
In de VOORGEVEL VAN DIT VOLUME bevinden zich twee rechthoekige glas-in-loodvenster met rondboog bovenlicht verdiept gelegen in een segmentboogvormige nis en boven een hardsteendorpel. In de tweede laag bevinden zich twee rondboogvormige vensters met roedeverdeling en glas-in-lood boven doorlopende vensterbank. In de top van de trapgevel bevindt zich een medaillon met mannenhoofd met baard in een ronde nis met acht sluitstenen.
Het LINKERDEEL VAN DE VOORGEVEL ligt terug en heeft een niet originele houten deur met roedeverdeling en ruitvormig gekleurd glas-in-lood bovenlicht, waarnaast een dubbel kozijn met brede tussenstijl, gekleurd ruitvormig glas-in-lood bovenlicht en luiken. Boven de deur bevindt zich een balkon op houten console met een niet originele houten balustrade en een kleine houten deur met een liggend rechthoekig venster, achter een rondboogje.
Links bevindt zich een klein rechthoekig venster.
Tegen de LINKERZIJGEVEL staat een vijfzijdige erker met kleine vensters met bovenlicht. Links van de erker bevindt zich een deur in de uitbouw van een laag. Boven de erker bevindt zich een houten balkondeur.
De ACHTERGEVEL heeft links een driedelig venster boven hardstenen bak met glas-in-lood bovenlicht met kleine afbeelding. Rechts tegen de gevel staat een niet orgineel volume van één laag onder een plat dak. In de gevel boven het platte dak bevindt zich een glas-in-loodbovenlicht met afbeelding. In het midden van de gevel begint vanaf zich verbredende baksteen consoles een rondboog gevelvlak dat eindigt in een smalle risalerende trapgevel. In de trapgevel bevindt zich een venster met niet orgineel rondboogvormig bovenlicht.
De STRUCTUUR VAN HET INTERIEUR is ten gevolge van de funktieverandering in redelijke mate in tact.
WAARDEVOLLE INTERIEURONDERDELEN zijn onder meer de originele ijzeren spiltrap.
Waardering
DE WERKPLAATS van Windhausen bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling van de kunstnijverheid Roermond en als bijzondere uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van kunstenaarsateliers. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het materiaalgebruik, van met name de trap en de ornamentiek. De ensemblewaarden worden bepaald door de bijzondere betekenis van de situering aan de Roer achter het woonhuis van Windhausen de Kapellerlaan en is daarmee verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de stad Roermond buiten de singels in het begin van de twintigste eeuw en van belang voor het aanzien van Roermond. WORKSHOP or studio built on commission for the Roermond artist-painter A. Windhausen, painter of ecclesiastical art and working in the art workshops of Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. The building was built in the first half of the 20th century in the style of Traditionalism and is located behind the former residence of this artist on the path along the Roer from the Kapellerlaan to the Andersonweg. Description
The WORKSHOP originally has a mainly rectangular floor plan in one storey with stepped gables, under a gabled roof with half-hipped end and curved pantiles. On the roof are two non-original roof lights and a copper ridge cresting with finial. The facades have a cemented plinth and a superstructure of brick in Flemish bond. In the facade are rectangular and round-arched window frames, some provided with leadlight or coloured glass-in-lead. Further, against all facade surfaces are multiple types of decorative wall anchors. The stepped gables begin with a corbelling as a base and are clad with a coping stone.
In the RIGHT SIDE FACADE in the first storey is a non-original aluminium frame in a recessed round-arched niche. In the second layer is a round-arched niche between two round-arched coloured glass-in-lead windows. Above this is a round niche between two anchors. On the corner of this facade and the front facade stands a step-wise rising small wall as a GATEWAY with round-arched passage and round-arched ironwork. Further with coping stones and a wall anchor, the upper three steps are narrower.
The FRONT FACADE has on the right of centre a projecting volume at the location of the stairwell. To the right of this volume is in the first layer a small window with reinforced glass and in the second layer an anchor.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE OF THIS VOLUME has a round-arched door with small rectangular window with figured glass and a door bell.
Above the door is a non-original mosaic and in the second layer is a round-arched niche.
In the FRONT FACADE OF THIS VOLUME are two rectangular coloured glass-in-lead windows with round-arched fanlight set back in a segmental-arched niche and above a stone coping. In the second layer are two round-arched windows with glazing bars and glass-in-lead above a continuous window sill. In the apex of the stepped gable is a medallion with bearded male head in a round niche with eight voussoirs.
The LEFT PART OF THE FRONT FACADE is set back and has a non-original wooden door with glazing bars and diamond-patterned coloured glass-in-lead fanlight, beside which is a double frame with wide central mullion, coloured diamond-patterned glass-in-lead fanlight and shutters. Above the door is a balcony on wooden console with a non-original wooden balustrade and a small wooden door with a horizontal rectangular window, behind a small round arch.
To the left is a small rectangular window.
Against the LEFT SIDE FACADE stands a five-sided bay window with small windows with fanlights. To the left of the bay window is a door in the extension of one storey. Above the bay window is a wooden balcony door.
The REAR FACADE has on the left a three-part window above a stone trough with coloured glass-in-lead fanlight with small image. To the right against the facade stands a non-original volume of one storey under a flat roof. In the facade above the flat roof is a coloured glass-in-lead fanlight with image. In the middle of the facade begins from widening brick consoles a round-arched facade surface that ends in a narrow risalant stepped gable. In the stepped gable is a window with non-original round-arched fanlight.
The STRUCTURE OF THE INTERIOR is in reasonable condition as a result of the change of function.
VALUABLE INTERIOR COMPONENTS include among others the original iron spiral staircase.
Valuation
THE WORKSHOP of Windhausen possesses cultural-historical values as a particular expression of the development of the arts and crafts industry in Roermond and as a particular expression of the typological development of artists' studios. The architectural-historical values are determined by the aesthetic qualities of the design, the use of materials, in particular the staircase and the ornamentation. The ensemble values are determined by the particular significance of the location on the Roer behind Windhausen's residence on the Kapellerlaan and is thereby connected with the development of the city of Roermond outside the ramparts in the early twentieth century and is important for the appearance of Roermond. The building has been preserved in reasonable condition and is culturally-historically and typologically rare. The workshop of artist-painter Windhausen is of general importance because of its high-quality cultural-historical values, the ensemble values and the rarity.
