Inleiding

Introduction

Whitewashed DWELLING HOUSE (type country house) from 1908 constructed in Moorish style, as part of the historic country estate 'Het Plantagehuis'. The country estate has its origin as the domain 'Vreeland', which dates back to the 18th century. In 1908 the Amsterdam merchant G.H. Hooft van Vreeland commissioned the construction of the main house in Moorish style in the midst of a landscaped park.

Description

The dwelling house is situated to the east of the old Vecht arm on the Kleizuwe. It is a detached building on an approximately rectangular floor plan, consisting of two storeys under a flat roof with a copper cupola. The facades are articulated horizontally by a string course with decorative brickwork of small corbels supporting the slightly projecting storey, interrupted by slightly projecting gable sections or balconies and provided there with a tooth frieze. Furthermore, the west facade is enlivened with decorative plasterwork above the arches and in a frieze. The principal facade (west facade) faces the river. The facade shows a tripartite division with gable planes offsetting each other in light relief. In the centre is a narrow recessed gable section with on the ground floor a treble Moorish arch on columns with between them a partly openwork breast wall. On the storey above a single window and a tower-shaped superstructure with in stylised form a tree-silhouette worked out crenellations crowned by a copper cupola. The slightly projecting volume to the left has on the ground floor two round-arched windows within a half-closed Moorish arch between pilasters. Above this is a rectangular suspended balcony on three corbels furnished with a balcony rail consisting of square pedestals with between them railwork with openwork breast wall. The slightly projecting middle section contains double balcony doors with double fanlight. In front of the left section which occupies two of the three gable planes is a terrace with balustrade and steps to the garden by the water. The right building volume projects with a portico which on the storey above passes into a bay window most forward and runs through into a retaining wall along the Vecht arm. On the storey above within the slightly projecting gable plane a rectangular wooden bay window has been installed. On either side of the bay window and in the side facades a window with fanlight has been placed. On the roof stands a small ornament depicting two copper executed dolphins. The facade on the street side (south facade) is arranged almost symmetrically with two slightly projecting gable sections over the full height of the facade. On the ground floor is a portico with columns on which two broad Moorish arches rest, each within a projecting gable section and flanked on either side by a narrow arch. The rightmost arch is the entrance portal, with a panelled door furnished with a decorative door grille. Within the portico the facade contains windows and arched windows. On the storey above in the projecting gable sections a rectangular wooden bay window on carved corbels has been installed. Between them is a whitewashed cast-iron plaque with the year 1832 in Roman numerals. On the gable corners recessed fields have been installed. On the roof stand two copper dolphins with a weathervane.

The north facade (rear side) has to the right of centre a large horseshoe-arch-shaped niche provided, built-out flue over the full height of the facade. To the right of this is on the ground floor within a recessed gable field a two-light window with mirror-arch termination. To the left are double doors installed with the same termination. Entirely to the left is a door in a shallow extension. On the storey above two wooden bay windows are installed as on the street side.

The east facade is treated subordinately with both on the ground floor and the storey above a large and a small window.

Valuation

The building is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural historical value as a former summer residence or gentleman's mansion originally built in 1832, in 1908 remodelled in an uncommon Moorish style, as well as a representative example of 19th century architecture which showed itself receptive with regard to non-European influences. Furthermore because of the intactness of main form and rich detailing of the exterior and because of the striking location in a nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century landscaped garden, bordering an old Vecht arm.
