Inleiding

- vanwege de eerste plaats die het blok als onderdeel van het complex inneemt in de lokale en regionale (en een zeer vroege plaats in de landelijke) geschiedenis van de georganiseerde volkhuisvesting;

- vanwege de uitwendig door renovatie enigszins verstoorde, maar niettemin evenwichtige en ingetogen Ambachtelijk traditionele bouwstijl;

Introduction

Block of eight WORKERS' DWELLINGS, Eigen Brood Bovenal 34-48, forming part of a complex of 64 workers' dwellings of 'Oud Eigen Brood Bovenal', consisting of eight blocks of eight dwellings each. This block was built in 1863 in Artisanal traditional building style to the design of architect Jacob Izaäks Douma for one of the earliest housing associations in the country and the first in Friesland.

Description

EXTERIOR: The eight dwellings, grouped in a block, were built in a most simple Artisanal traditional building style. The block belongs to the oldest building period and is located on the narrow street Eigen Brood Bovenal. The small houses measure 6 by 6.3 metres. Each house has a bleach ground or garden five metres deep, originally separated mainly by trellis fencing and nowadays largely by privet hedges. The block is not connected back-to-back with the block behind it, but there is an alley one metre wide between them, which allows the dwellings to receive light and air somewhat from both sides. For each group of eight there was a large rainwater tank and for each 24 dwellings they were jointly also provided with a well with pump. Outside the door there were groups of privies, separate ones for women and men. These additional facilities were later incorporated into the dwellings and the outbuildings disappeared.

The front facades are per dwelling a double window bay and a slightly projecting door bay wide. Above a rendered plinth the walls are built of reddish-brown and brown brickwork. The right-angled wall openings are covered by brick-nogging. At the last renovation the renewed double windows lost their glazing bars and the fanlights were provided with tilting or pivoting windows. The originally solid doors were then replaced by glazed panel doors. Above in the wall are ornamental wall anchors. The gutters rest on modest moulded brackets. The dwelling rows have gently sloping hipped roofs with renewed, black glazed roof tiles. On the roof are series of dormers with sloping roofs installed in 1935. The bleach grounds at the front, once separated by trellis fencing and nowadays mostly by privet hedges, are laid out as individual gardens.

INTERIOR: Originally the small dwellings received a layout of a room of 5.6 by 4.4 metres, including two bed alcoves and a cupboard, a substantial entrance hall and a workroom of 1.8 by 2.1 metres which could be used as a kitchen. There is a fixed staircase to the attic. Under the stairs was a cupboard and below it a small cellar accessible via the storage or wash room behind it. Philips Kooperberg noted in 1888 that the attics were usually fitted out as sleeping quarters or rooms for homework: "The roofs are not boarded and too flat, so that the attics are not free from damp". The interior of these workers' dwellings has been repeatedly rebuilt and from the nineteen-thirties onwards adapted to contemporary domestic comfort. The interiors therefore fall outside the protection.

VALUATION

The block of eight WORKERS' DWELLINGS, Eigen Brood Bovenal 34-48, forming part of the complex of 64 workers' dwellings of 'Oud Eigen Brood Bovenal' is of general social-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning importance

- because of the first place which the block as part of the complex occupies in the local and regional (and a very early place in the national) history of organised workers' housing;

- because of the externally somewhat disturbed by renovation, but nonetheless balanced and restrained Artisanal traditional building style;

- because of the characteristic urban planning layout in strict strips which has resulted in a clear complex in an environment that is nowadays somewhat ragged.
