Omschrijving onderdeel 1

KASTEEL.

Description component 1

CASTLE.

Brick building on an almost square ground plan. The cellared complex consists of three approximately equally wide wings under gabled roofs between stepped gables. The two side wings are connected on the northeast side by an approximately 2.5 m. projecting square entrance tower from the gable wall. The oldest phase of the castle is a possibly 13th-century cellar in the left wing. In the 14th and 15th centuries the castle was considerably extended and the eastern and southern wings were created, as well as the entrance tower with built-in spiral staircase. The castle had acquired an L-shape. Possibly after a destruction at the end of the 15th century the right wing was created and the rear wing was renewed. In the middle of the 16th century the castle acquired its final extent: the rear and right-side wings were heightened with bands of marl stone being applied. In the courtyard came a staircase. The small courtyard was covered in the middle of the 18th century and crowned by a skylight. In 1835 the facades were altered. On that occasion the windows were placed lower and on the upper storey regularly distributed in relation to the ground floor. They received glazing bars and a fanlight with a fan motif as corner filling. The masonry was provided with plaster. During restoration the 19th-century plaster layer was removed and some of the windows reconstructed as cross windows. Because the windows regained their original height, the two bands of marl stone running around the western and northern facades, between which are bird-nest holes, could also be restored. The entire building has a high basement storey with barrel and cross vaults. Above this a bel-étage. The main wing (southwest) and the right side wing have a storey with cross windows replaced during restoration; the bel-étage has multi-pane windows. Above the windows of both the bel-étage and the storey double marl bands with between them bird-nest stones of the same material. Roofs with slate covering between stepped gables. The left side wing has part-pane windows with shutters on the bel-étage. The upper two panes with splay according to Empire lining filled with fan motif. Above this a roof storey with roof dormers. The roof is covered with grey tiles. Access door with fanlight in tower with simple wooden main frame with cornice. In the fanlight with two pointed arches, between which a circular form. The tower has an octagonal compressed spire with slate covering. The castle has interiors with finishes from the 16th to the 19th century. In the vestibule: hardstone paving from the 18th century and stucco reliefs on rear wall from 1772. In various rooms wooden ceilings with bandwork in Louis XIV style. In the library a 16th-century carved sandstone fireplace which was placed in modified form in 1742.
