Inleiding
De voormalige SYNAGOGE is gelegen op de hoek Elfhuizen - Venestraat, in het centrum van Geertruidenberg. Het gebouw is aan de oost- en noordzijde vastgebouwd aan de belendende panden. De synagoge werd in 1874 opgetrokken en vertoont stijlelementen van de Overgangsarchitectuur. De voormalige synagoge is sinds 1945 niet meer als zodanig in gebruik. In de na-oorlogse periode deed het gebouw achtereenvolgens dienst als opslagruimte en kantoor. In 1980 werd het gebouw, voornamelijk inwendig, verbouwd.
Omschrijving
De voormalige synagoge is opgezet als eenbeukige zaalkerk en telt één bouwlaag onder een zadeldak, gedekt met oud-Hollandse pannen. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in baksteen, met hardstenen elementen, zoals gevellijst, kroonlijst en vensterdorpels. De westelijke kopgevel wordt gekenmerkt door twee hoekpilasters met natuurstenen bekroningselementen. Op de begane grond de hoofdingang onder segmentboog, waarin een (niet authentieke) beglaasde deur met zij- en bovenlicht. Hiervoor een houten opgeklampte vleugeldeur. Boven de ingang een bord met opschrift in Hebreeuws: "Gezegend zijt gij die binnentreedt en gij die buitentreedt". Op de bovenverdieping een rondboogvenster met ijzeren roeden. Hierboven, in de geveltop, een ingemetselde gevelsteen in de vorm van een wetstafel, waarop de Romeinse cijfers I t/m X. De zuidelijke gevel telt vier traveeën en wordt geleed door steunberen. De gevel heeft een afsluiting in de vorm van een kroonlijst. De drie meest westelijke traveeën zijn voorzien van rondboogvensters, voorzien van ijzeren roeden. De meest oostelijke travee heeft een ingangspartij met ingangsparij. Paneeldeur met bovenlicht. Hierboven een getoogd venster met zesruits raam. De inwendige dispositie van de voormalige synagoge is bij de verbouwing van 1980 vrijwel geheel gewijzigd.

The former SYNAGOGUE is located on the corner of Elfhuizen - Venestraat, in the centre of Geertruidenberg. The building is built flush to the adjacent properties on the east and north sides. Description
The former synagogue is laid out as a single-aisle hall church and has one storey beneath a gabled roof, covered with old Dutch tiles. The facades are built in brickwork, with stone elements, such as cornice-topped facade, cornice and window sills. The western end gable is characterised by two corner pilasters with natural stone coping elements. On the ground floor the main entrance beneath a segmental arch, with a (non-authentic) glazed door with side and fanlight. In front of it a wooden clamped folding door. The internal layout of the former synagogue was almost entirely altered during the 1980 renovation.
