Inleiding.
STANDBEELD van het Heilig Hart van Jezus, gesitueerd aan de oostzijde van de als dorpsgezicht beschermde Houtse Heuvel in de kern van Den Hout, direct voor de ingang van de r.-k. Corneliuskerk.
Het object dateert uit 1924 en is vervaardigd door J.W. Ramakers en Zn. uit Geleen in een stijl die elementen vertoont van de Art Déco.
Het beeld is geplaatst ter gelegenheid van het gouden priesterfeest van de uit Den Hout afkomstige J.H.C. van Breugel.
Omschrijving.
Het frontaal gerichte, symmetrische bouwsel beslaat een halfcirkelvormige plattegrond, gebogen aan de kerkzijde en recht aan de straatzijde, en bestaat uit een Christusbeeld op een ronde sokkel, centraal gelegen op een mozaïek-tegelvloer die omzoomd wordt met een hekwerk tussen pijlers en op een basement.
De staande kalkstenen Christus, met vergulde kruisnimbus, heeft lange haren, een baard en is blootvoets. Hij gaat gekleed in een lange geplooide tunica en heeft een hart met doornenkroon op de borst, verwijzend naar de 'fornax ardens caritatis', de gloeiende Vuuroven van Liefde. Met vergulde letters is op de voetplaat de tekst 'KOMT ALLEN TOT MIJ' aangebracht (enkele letters ontbreken). Het beeld rust op een deels glad geslepen, granieten sokkel met een octogonale kop en een trapsgewijs opklimmende ronde onderbouw met vier ingezwenkte steunberen. Op de sokkel staat in bas-reliëf de tekst 'HET GODDELIJK / HART VAN JESUS / 1874 / J.H.C. V. BREUGEL PASTOOR / 1924 / TOEWIJDING VAN DE / PAROCHIE DEN HOUT / AAN HAAR KONING' Omringende vloer belegd met polyform en polychroom mozaïekwerk, dat een abstract patroon vormt met uitzondering van drie tableaus waarin de letters 'SS' (Spiritus Sanctius), 'COR.' (Cornelius) en 'IHS' (In Hoc Signo). De sokkel en buitenrand zijn afgezet met felrode strengperssteen. De vloer wordt omringd door een smeedijzeren hekwerk met kruisvormige knopspijlen, geplaatst op een basement en tussen twee pijlers, voorzien van naar vier zijden gerichte Latijnse kruisen.
Waardering.
Het Heilig-Hartbeeld is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarden. Het is van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de rooms-katholieke Heilig Hartdevotie in de jaren twintig van de twintigste eeuw. Daarnaast als uitdrukking van een sociale ontwikkeling in relatie tot de Den Houtse priester Van Breugel. Verder is het object van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van Heilig Hartbeelden. Het object heeft kunsthistorische waarden. STATUE of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, situated on the east side of the Houtse Heuvel, protected as a village scene, in the centre of Den Hout, directly in front of the entrance to the R.C. Corneliuskerk.
The object dates from 1924 and was made by J.W. Ramakers and Sons from Geleen in a style that shows elements of Art Deco.
The statue was placed on the occasion of the golden jubilee of priesthood of J.H.C. van Breugel, who came from Den Hout.
Description.
The frontally oriented, symmetrical structure occupies a semicircular floor plan, curved on the church side and straight on the street side, and consists of a Christ statue on a round plinth, centrally located on a mosaic tile floor which is bordered by fencing between pillars and on a basement.
The standing limestone Christ, with gilded crucifix nimbus, has long hair, a beard and is barefoot. He is dressed in a long pleated tunic and has a heart with a crown of thorns on his chest, referring to the 'fornax ardens caritatis', the glowing Furnace of Love. In gilded letters the text 'COMES UNTO ME' is applied to the base plate (some letters are missing). The statue rests on a partly smooth-dressed granite plinth with an octagonal top and a stepwise rising round understructure with four recessed buttresses. On the plinth stands in bas-relief the text 'THE DIVINE / HEART OF JESUS / 1874 / J.H.C. V. BREUGEL PASTOR / 1924 / DEDICATION OF THE / PARISH OF DEN HOUT / TO HER KING'. Surrounding floor paved with polyform and polychrome mosaic work, forming an abstract pattern with the exception of three tableaus with the letters 'SS' (Spiritus Sanctius), 'COR.' (Cornelius) and 'IHS' (In Hoc Signo). The plinth and outer edge are bordered with bright red pressed brick. The floor is surrounded by wrought iron fencing with cross-shaped knop pillars, placed on a basement and between two pillars, provided with Latin crosses directed towards four sides.
