Inleiding
Deze SCHOOL (momenteel de Dr. A. van Voorthuijsenschool) werd in de periode 1906-1907 gebouwd naar ontwerp van de gemeente-architect W. Honig aan de Schoolstraat als een symmetrische opgezet gebouw. Het pand is van de straat gescheiden door een groot voorplein met enkele bomen. De school vormt een goed voorbeeld van de voor de jaren 1900-1910 karakteristieke Overgangarchitectuur. Deze benaming is van toepassing op veel bouwwerken die rond de eeuwwisseling zijn ontstaan en die een overgang vormen van de neostijlen en het historisme naar een meer moderne, niet of nog weinig aan historische stijlelementen gebonden architectuur. Over het algemeen is er sprake van het door elkaar gebruiken van elementen uit de neorenaissance, de chaletstijl en de Art Nouveau/Jugendstil, naast Berlagiaanse en rationalistische kenmerken.
Omschrijving
De school heeft één bouwlaag en een vierkante plattegrond. De baksteengevels zijn gemetseld in kruisverband en ter hoogte van de onder-, de wissel-, en de tussendorpels gedecoreerd met speklagen in oranje en gele verblendsteen. De omlopende plint is afgesloten met een profielsteen. Boven de grote houten kruiskozijnen bevinden zich lateibalken en segmentboogjes in oranje en gele verblendsteen. De boogvelden daartussen zijn voorzien van schuingeplaatste bakstenen. Het samengestelde dak is belegd met rode tuile du nord pannen en voorzien van een geprofileerde bakgoot op klossen.
De VOOR- en ACHTERGEVEL zijn op identieke wijze uitgevoerd met twee vooruitspringende bouwdelen met een topgevel met schouders en uitgemetselde tuiten. Tussen de risalieten bevindt zich aan elke zijde een ingangspartij. De ingangspartij in de voorgevel heeft een fraaie dubbele paneeldeur met twee 9-ruits getoogde raampjes. De deuren hebben gekoppelde bovenlichten en smalle zijlichten. Boven de ingangspartij is in een band van witte verblendsteen met rode steen het woord "School II" aangegeven. De smalle zijlichten zijn aan de bovenzijde afgesloten met een kleine lateibalk en een segmentboogje als genoemd. Ook boven de bovenlichten van de voordeur bevindt zich zo'n afsluiting. De risalieten aan weerszijden van de ingangspartij bevatten elk twee houten kruisvensters waarvan de onderramen elk een 12-ruits verdeling en de bovenramen elk een 6-ruits verdeling hebben. De topgevels hebben elk een dubbel houten zolderluik en zijn eveneens van speklagen in oranje en gele verblendsteen voorzien. Links van het linker- en rechts van het rechterrisaliet bevinden zich twee kruisvensters als genoemd.
De LINKER ZIJGEVEL is evenals de RECHTER ZIJGEVEL uitgevoerd met vier kruisvensters als genoemd met links daarvan twee en rechts daarvan eveneens twee blinde vensternissen van dezelfde grootte.
Het INTERIEUR is vrij goed bewaard gebleven en bezit ondermeer nog originele (terazzo)vloeren en paneeldeuren.
Waardering
SCHOOL gebouwd in Overgangsarchitectuur uit 1906-1907. Architectuurhistorische waarden:
- De school valt op door de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en vormt een goed voorbeeld van de zogenaamde Overgangsarchitectuur uit het eerste decennium van de twintigste eeuw.

Introduction
This SCHOOL (currently the Dr. A. van Voorthuijsenschool) was built in the period 1906-1907 according to a design by municipal architect W. Honig on the Schoolstraat as a symmetrically composed building. The building is separated from the street by a large forecourt with a few trees. The school is a good example of the Transitional architecture characteristic of the years 1900-1910. Description
The school has one storey and a square floor plan. The brick facades are laid in Flemish bond and at the level of the lower, the middle, and the intermediate corbels decorated with banding in orange and yellow facing brick. The surrounding plinth is finished with a moulded stone. Above the large wooden cross windows are lintels and segmental arches in orange and yellow facing brick. The spandrels between them are furnished with diagonally placed bricks. The composite roof is covered with red tuile du nord tiles and fitted with a moulded brick gutter on corbels.
The FRONT and REAR FACADES are executed identically with two projecting building sections with a stepped gable with shoulders and chamfered corners. Between the risalits there is an entrance section on each side. The entrance section in the front facade has a fine double panelled door with two 9-pane arched windows. The doors have coupled fanlights and narrow side lights. Above the entrance section is indicated in a band of white facing brick with red stone the word "School II". The narrow side lights are closed at the top with a small lintel and a segmental arch as mentioned. Also above the fanlights of the front door is such a closure. The risalits on either side of the entrance section each contain two wooden cross windows of which the lower panes each have a 12-pane glazing and the upper panes each have a 6-pane glazing. The stepped gables each have a double wooden loft door and are likewise furnished with banding in orange and yellow facing brick. To the left of the left and to the right of the right risalit are two cross windows as mentioned.
