The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Three-aisled Roman Catholic Church of St. Trudo with a dome over the crossing. Plans for a new church and contact with the architect existed from 1912 onwards. The actual construction took place in 1927 according to designs by architect J. Stuyt in Traditionalist forms with elements of Neo-Romanesque. The church stands on the Molenstraat, in the heart of Zundert.

Description.

The three-aisled nave comprises four bays under a gabled roof. The side aisles are lower than the nave and are each fitted with a hipped roof at right angles to the gabled roof of the nave. Transept under gabled roof. Above the crossing a large round dome has been placed. Against the choir a hemicircular apse, provided with a low ambulatory under a half-hipped roof. Against the front (on the north-west side of the church) a porch has been placed, which is somewhat lower than the nave. Within it a broad portico with three round-arched openings on columns has been constructed. To the left a devotional chapel, to the right a low octagonal tower. Behind the devotional chapel stands a square tower, the upper part of which is octagonal, crowned by a spire. On the rear side, between the transepts and the choir, block-shaped building masses under hip roofs are present.

The church is executed in brick, fitted with crenellated string courses and buttresses against the side elevations. The gables of the porch and the transepts are provided with tiles in black and white in a diamond pattern, surrounded by a red and yellow band. In the gables of the transepts a yellow cross is incorporated, on the front, above the porch a saintly image in a niche in the gable is incorporated. Beneath the roof of the apse a tiled band with diamond patterns in black, white, yellow and red has been applied. The roofs are covered with slate and provided with profiled gutters on corbels. Above the porch is a large round window with star-shaped glazing bars. The side elevations have high-positioned semicircular windows with a natural stone mullion, filled with stained glass. Windows of the same form but larger are placed in the gables of the transverse wings. In the roof plane of the transverse wings small dormer windows, triangular with wooden frontage. In the upper edge of the dome windows recessed in the brickwork have been placed. The apse has round windows.

The interior is whitewashed. The walls have a two-part elevation. The transept has against the gable walls an extension which corresponds with a niche in the interior. Therein is situated in the southern transverse arm a Baroque altar retable from 1622 by Hans van Mildert, originating from the St. Michael's Abbey in Antwerp. In the retable a painting depicting the Adoration of the Magi, a copy after Rubens from 1809 by K. van Amelsfoort; belonging to this are the figures originally placed on the pediment, now standing loose in the church, of the Virgin Mary, St. Michael and St. Norbertus, also by Hans van Mildert. The inventory further includes an altar tomb in the northern transept, the tabernacle cupboard in a northern side chapel, all from St. Michael's Abbey. On the north side also a Baroque marble altar retable from circa 1655, with a painting by Ph. Fruytier, depicting the Glorification of the Virgin Mary. In the south chapel a marble altar retable from circa 1675 by Artus Quellien the Younger, with a painting by Johannes Erasmus Quellin depicting the Apparition of Mary to the blessed Herman Jozef. Two carved oak confessionals from the seventeenth century.

A pulpit from 1840 comes from the Peeters Atelier from Turnhout.

Organ case, made by J. Binvignat around 1800.

Valuation.

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as a special expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of significance as an example of the typological development of the ecclesiastical centre in the period shortly after 1900.

The building has architectural-historical significance through the style and the detailing, in which the architect wished to settle accounts with the traditional neo-styles. It is also of significance as an example of the oeuvre of architects Cuypers and Stuyt. It has art-historical significance through the older interior components present. It has ensemble values because of its particular setting, connected with the development of the church village. It is of significance because of its architectural-historical and typological rarity.
