Inleiding.
VILLA, gebouwd in 1935 door architect F.C. Rampart uit Bergen op Zoom, in opdracht van W. Vorsselmans (drukker te Zundert) in een Expressionistische stijl. Het pand ligt net buiten het centrum van Zundert aan de weg naar het Belgische Meer.
Omschrijving.
De villa bestaat uit een tweelaagse hoofdmassa op rechthoekige plattegrond, onder schilddak waarvan de nok haaks op de weg staat. Het geheel is opgetrokken in een licht gele baksteen op een hoge plint, uitgevoerd in donker rode baksteen. Het dak is gedekt met gotische pannen. De topgevels van garage en erkers zijn betimmerd met vertikaal geplaatste planken en voorzien van een dekoratief element in het midden, herhaald als piron op de top.
Tegen de linkerzijgevel is (ongeveer halverwege de gevel) een één laag hoge serre met terras aangebouwd, het dakvlak van de hoofdmassa loopt vanaf het schilddak daarboven als een lessenaarsdak door en vormt met een fors overstek op uitbuikende zuilen een afdak boven het terras. Serre en terras (met dak) zijn naar achter toe uitgebreid omstreeks 1988. Deze uitbreiding is in stijl aangepast aan de vormgeving van het woonhuis. Tegen de gevel aan de straatkant is vanaf de rechterhoek tot ongeveer halverwege de breedte een erker geplaatst, aansluitend een plantenbak die verder doorloopt als afscheiding van het terras. De woning heeft liggende rechthoekige ramen. In de rechterzijgevel zijn ter plekke van het trappenhuis smalle hoge ramen aangebracht. Deze zijn gevuld met glas-in-lood. Daarnaast bevinden zich kleine hooggeplaatste raampjes. Vensterbanken (zowel aan binnen- als aan buitenzijde van de ramen) bestaan uit geglazuurde tegels. Aan de achterzijde van het pand (tegen de rechterhoek) zijn éénlaagse bouwmassa's onder plat dak met dakterras aanwezig. Aan de rechterzijde verbindt een kleine aanbouw onder zadeldak, haaks op de hoofdmassa, het huis met een éénlaagse garage onder zadeldak waarvan de nok evenwijdig aan het schilddak loopt. In de aanbouw bevindt zich de ingang, bereikbaar via een opstap en betegeld bordes. Aan weerszijden van de deur zijn glas-in-loodramen met gebrandschilderd glas geplaatst. Deze ramen zijn afkomstig uit drukkerij Vorsselmans en hebben voorstellingen met betrekking tot de uitvinding van de boekdrukkunst. Ze zijn hier hergebruikt. De garage heeft een dubbele openslaande deur met smalle vertikale raampjes.
In het interieur is de oorspronkelijke indeling bewaard gebleven. Het huis is gedeeltelijk onderkelderd, in de voorraadkelders zijn ingebouwde schappen aanwezig. In de hal en het trappenhuis zijn de houten lambrizeringen, bestaande uit hoge (verticaal geplaatste) panelen nog aanwezig.
Waardering.
De villa is van algemeen belang. Het huis heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, het is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de villa in het Interbellum. Het object is van architectuurhistorisch belang door deverzorgde detaillering en als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van de architect Rampart. The villa consists of a two-storey main mass on a rectangular plan, under a hipped roof with the ridge at right angles to the road. The whole is built in a light yellow brick on a high plinth, executed in dark red brick. The roof is covered with Gothic tiles. The gable ends of the garage and bay windows are clad with vertically placed boards and fitted with a decorative element in the middle, repeated as a finial on the apex.
Against the left side wall (approximately halfway along the wall) a one-storey conservatory with terrace is attached; the roof plane of the main mass extends from the hipped roof above it as a lean-to roof and forms a substantial overhang on projecting columns, creating a canopy above the terrace. The conservatory and terrace (with roof) were extended to the rear around 1988. This extension is adapted in style to the design of the residential building. Against the façade facing the street, from the right corner to approximately halfway along the width, a bay window is positioned; adjoining it a planter box which continues further as a division of the terrace. The house has horizontal rectangular windows. In the right side wall, at the location of the stairwell, tall narrow windows are fitted. These are filled with leaded glass. Beside these are small high-placed windows. Window sills (both on the inside and outside of the windows) consist of glazed tiles. At the rear of the building (against the right corner) single-storey building volumes under flat roofs with roof terraces are present. On the right side, a small extension under a gabled roof, at right angles to the main mass, connects the house to a single-storey garage under a gabled roof with the ridge parallel to the hipped roof. In the extension is the entrance, accessible via a ramp and tiled landing. On either side of the door are leaded glass windows with stained glass are positioned. These windows are from the Vorsselmans printing works and feature representations relating to the invention of printing. They have been reused here. The garage has a double hinged door with narrow vertical windows.
In the interior, the original layout is preserved. The house is partially undercellared; in the storage cellars, built-in shelving is present. In the hall and stairwell, the wooden panelling, consisting of tall (vertically placed) panels, is still present.
