Inleiding
Ten noordwesten van kazemat 435 staat op de westelijke kade van het Defensiekanaal de S (3a) KAZEMAT 438, daterende uit 1939-1940. De wal is ter plaatse aan de zijde van het kanaal gedeeltelijk afgegraven.
Omschrijving
De kazemat staat ten zuiden van de plaats waar een thans verharde landbouwweg met brug (6.2) de Peel-Raamstelling kruist. Door het linker schietgat kan de kazemat flankerend vuur op deze weg geven. De kazemat G (180lv) 437 stond in de nabijheid van kazemat 438 en kon frontaal vuur op de weg afgeven. Deze G-kazemat is reeds in 1941 gesloopt. Kazemat 438 is gaaf bewaard gebleven en vertoont geen gevechtssporen.
Waardering
De kazemat is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geografische ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking en daaropvolgende verdediging van Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en is als zodanig een belangrijk document van de militaire geschiedenis. Het is van architectuur- en bouwhistorisch belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de toepassing van moderne materialen en technieken, met name in de verwerking van gewapend beton. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel, dat cultuurhistorisch van belang is en is van belang wegens de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de bebouwing en de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met wegen, wateren en bodemgesteldheid. Northwest of casemate 435, on the western embankment of the Defence Canal stands the S (3a) CASEMATE 438, dating from 1939-1940. The embankment has been partially excavated at this location on the canal side.
Description
The casemate is located south of the place where a now metalled agricultural road with bridge (6.2) crosses the Peel-Raam position. Through the left firing port the casemate can deliver flanking fire on this road. The G-casemate (180lv) 437 stood in the vicinity of casemate 438 and could deliver frontal fire on the road. This G-casemate was already demolished in 1941. Casemate 438 has been preserved intact and shows no signs of combat.
Valuation
The casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and as such is an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction-historical importance because of the distinctive use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, particularly in the use of reinforced concrete. It has ensemble values as an essential part of a larger whole that is of cultural-historical importance and is significant because of the high quality of the construction and the historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions.
