Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Directly west of the Defence Canal, in 1939 an EMBANKMENT was constructed using earth from the canal, equipped on the rear side with an ACCESS ROAD. Through the embankment the exits of the casemates and the rear-lying stop line of the main resistance zone could be hidden from the enemy's view. In addition, the embankment offered the advantage that the troops in semi-permanent positions had a better overview of the field of fire. After the war the profile of the embankment was altered in several places. In part this was done because Rijkswaterstaat locally constructed a broad, passable by motor vehicles inspection path along the canal. Over small distances the entire embankment has disappeared through land consolidation.
Description
The earthen embankment has a height of approximately two metres on the front side and a width of approximately 15 metres. Towards the gorge side the height drops sharply. North of casemate 445 the embankment has entirely disappeared, south of that, between 428 and 445 the embankment has retained mostly the original profile, albeit that for the maintenance of the canal a path passable by motor vehicles has been constructed on that side. Of the originally constructed approach trenches, angled across the embankment from gorge to front side leading to the entrances of the casemates, traces are incidentally still present. Further the embankment still has a single traverse, which is original; such as at the location of the reinforced concrete casemate 446 positioned behind the embankment, demolished in 1992, which was to provide fire on the terrain in front. Of importance further is that the unmade access road on the rear side of the embankment has also been partially preserved. This applies in particular to the situation between casemate 428 and 440. In the most western part of the line, between 428 and 431, the rear road lies approximately one hundred metres from the embankment.
Valuation
The earthen embankment is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and as such is an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction-historical importance due to the use of materials and the application of modern techniques. It has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole, which is of cultural-historical importance and is of importance due to the high quality of the buildings and the historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions. The whole has great amenity value and is as a large-scale military complex and reminder of an important episode in national history rare.
