Inleiding
Ten noorden van kazemat 406 staat op de westelijke kade van het Defensiekanaal de S (3a) KAZEMAT 409, daterende uit 1939-1940. De wal heeft ter plaatse van oorsprong minder hoogte, zodat B (270a) kazemat 408 flankerend vuur op het voorterrein noordelijk van de Deurneseweg af kon geven.
Omschrijving
De kazemat staat direct ten zuiden van de plaats waar het kanaal de Deurneseweg, de belangrijke ontsluitingsweg tussen Oploo, De Rips en Deurne, kruist. Door het middelste schietgat kan de kazemat frontaal vuur op deze weg geven. De kazemat is gaaf bewaard gebleven en vertoont geen gevechtssporen.
Waardering
De kazemat is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geografische ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking en daaropvolgende verdediging van Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en is als zodanig een belangrijk document van de militaire geschiedenis. Het is van architectuur- en bouwhistorisch belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de toepassing van moderne materialen en technieken, met name in de verwerking van gewapend beton. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel, dat cultuurhistorisch van belang is en is van belang wegens de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de bebouwing en de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met wegen, wateren en bodemgesteldheid. North of casemate 406, on the western quay of the Defence Canal stands the S (3a) CASEMATE 409, dating from 1939-1940. The embankment originally has less height at this location, so that B (270a) casemate 408 could provide flanking fire on the terrain north of the Deurneseweg.
Description
The casemate stands directly south of the place where the canal crosses the Deurneseweg, the important main access road between Oploo, De Rips and Deurne. Through the middle loophole the casemate can give frontal fire on this road. The casemate has been preserved intact and shows no battle damage.
Valuation
The casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and as such is an important document of military history.
