Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The former villa 'De Groote Slink', now called Bronlaak, was designed between 1908 and 1910 by Amsterdam architect Karel Muller on commission of Adam Roelvink in Traditionalist forms. The villa was created in two closely successive building phases. The first phase displays typological characteristics of farmhouse construction, as Roelvink stipulated in the design that the villa could if necessary be used as a farmhouse. It concerns a single-storey, partly two-storey building with a roughly rectangular floor plan. The whole is covered by a very substantial, asymmetrical gabled roof. Distinctive is that the villa is situated on an artificially raised hill and dominates the surrounding park, laid out according to a design by Leonard Springer. Around 1965 a single-storey annex under a flat roof was realized on the northern side of the building. The eastern part of this annex was demolished in 1992 and replaced by new construction.
Description
The villa is constructed in brick and has a wide and high gabled roof, which at the location of the northern facade and the veranda is set low. The western part of the building is the oldest. This part of the house, rectangular in floor plan, is set up as a farmhouse, whereby the living room situated in the western part with overlying bedrooms, accessible via an open staircase, were designed to be easily convertible if necessary into business space with overlying storage loft. Against the southern facade, in line with the axis of Düsseldorfer Allee, the building plan provided for the annex of a simple veranda, which could if necessary serve as a carriage house. The enlargement of the country house around 1910 was entirely in the style of the western part. The enlargement involved the construction of an extension in the eastern direction, whereby the old eastern facade was entirely incorporated. Here too simple detailing is characteristic, but the scale has more the character of a villa: the eastern part is two-storey, whereby in the southeastern corner, with balcony, the former bedroom of Roelvink is situated, with a view over the park. In the new eastern facade the front door is incorporated, which consists of a simple panel door with lights. The interior has largely retained the original layout. The simple detailing is for the most part original. Important are amongst other things the tile floors in the hall and passages, the simple stucco decorations on the ceilings, the wooden wainscots in the living room, the remaining panel doors, and the brick fireplace in the living room, which, with on either side a wooden turf chair, equipped with hinged seat, is placed in a projecting recess in the western facade.
Valuation
The villa is of general interest. The house has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural, geographical and landscape development, namely the reclamation of the Peel by private individuals in the period shortly after 1900. It is of importance for the history of architecture and garden design, through the application of rural and Traditional stylistic forms in a design adapted to the desired image, it is of importance as an example of the work of architect Muller. It has ensemble values because of its siting, connected with the development of the Peel after 1900 and is of particular significance because of the high quality of the building and the historical-spatial relationship with green spaces, roads, waters and soil composition.
