Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the eastern side of the Kloosterlaan stands the former ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING of the Chassékazerne, dating from 1888-'89. The building, with elements of the Neo-Renaissance style, was designed by the Building Department of the Ministry of War, probably by J.A. van den Biezen. At present the property is enclosed by other buildings, but originally it stood freely on the former parade ground of the Chassékazerne, near the barracks demolished in 1953-'56 and the Artillery stables. The construction of the Claudius Prinsenlaan in 1952 cut the building off from the barracks grounds. In 1958 the administrative building was disposed of. The H.T.S. Breda took the building into use in 1960 and established laboratories and classrooms there. Later it served as a branch for the Handelsschool St. Olof, while from 1981 onwards it has been in use for cultural purposes and for the benefit of the J.A.C..
Around 1980, large roof windows were installed in the roof slopes.
Description
The elongated property has a rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys plus a roof storey. It is covered by a gabled roof with old Dutch tiles.
The building is constructed of brick and features, particularly in the western façade, a rich application of decorative brickwork in various colours in mouldings, courses, arch fields and frieze, and stone in plinth, cornice bands, lintels and carved heads against the frieze. Remarkable are the two chimney stacks on the side façades, each with a trefoil floor plan.
The front façade has nine window bays and has an approximately symmetrical arrangement with half-brick projecting corner risalits, each with two window bays. These have on the ground floor and first floor coupled, somewhat simplified windows in the outer window bays, next to which is an applied door with fanlight. On the right side, an opening door is also applied on the first floor at that location. All façade openings in the central section of the front façade situated between the corner risalits are provided with four-pane sash windows.
The side façades are modest in arrangement. Striking are the projecting ears on either side of the stone cornice bands. In the southern façade a wrought-iron hoist beam with cast-iron ornamentation. On the ground floor of both façades an applied double door with fanlight and a coupled window, on the first floor two windows and wall anchors, all as in the front façade. The roof storey is lit by two small windows. The rear façade has an irregular arrangement with nine window bays. In the third and eighth window bays an applied door, in the others sash windows.
In the interior, particularly noteworthy are the arrangement, with the large hall on the ground floor situated between corridors and staircases, as well as the cast-iron columns provided with bases and capitals in this hall, which support the floor above on rolled steel beams.
